Although I would normally agree with you, I don't in this case. Those three cops that watched that guy slowly killed are the sick individuals. There needs to be some kind of a better process to pick these cops. Way too many of them have god complexes. 0317, I think you're missing a knife from your set.
There sure is a fine line between being hypervigilant and being a true ahole. Even the average patrol officer in an average town encounters many wild situations and has to dominate the scene. Not be present and barney fife it, but dominate or risk getting run over and or the bad guys getting away and justice not being served. Hence some cops you guys see with the god complex are really guys just set in a perpetual state of hypervigilance and it can really hurt a man. A good man that doesnt mean anyone any harm. Years and years of constantly having your head on a swivel will do that. That being said, cops need to do better. EVERY single one of the 13 guys I supervise said the same thing....damn that cop in MN that was bs! We went over group think that night and talked about scenarios where action must be taken. If the Chief of Police needs mental and or physical redirection to save someone's life or do the right thing, we are gonna do it. Anyways. Have a good one fellas. Needless to say this is some stressful stuff and the fallout in this county ot a half million people is going to happen and progress through the summer, making everyone edgy and dangerous. Not good.

Very well said. I am a municipal employee in a small town. I work closely with our officers every day. I mean no disrespect to police offfices in general. This incident though is just so discouraging to see, not to mention maddening. What I'm saying is, something has to he wrong in either the mental preparation or the training with these guys. I understand there were several red flags with these guys? No? Virginiashadow, since you are obviously more qualified to opine on this than most, me included, what do you think can be done to help keep our officers from crossing that line?
I'm no expert but what I feel makes this biggest difference is everyone looking out for each other. If we sense someone is starting to go downhill we talk with them and then take action. It may be a small gesture but I'll send guys home early if I have the staffing. Tell them to get some much needed rest and tell them they are going a good job. Stop the tough guy mind frame unless it's actually time to be a tough guy. Be smart. Actually think through your decisions. Having resiliency training where when things get bad you can use multiple mental options to make yourself healthy. That all translates into someone not being stupid and kneeling on someone's neck for 9 minutes. If localities want the hours for training that are desperately needed then they are going to have to increase the police forces by 15 to 20% to take into account more training. We are stretched too thin every night.

We just had a wht semi drive go nuts after a speeding stop. We all got the cell alert on where he was headed and stay off the roads. He was taking cops on a several county chase ,raming cop cars weaving all over the roads. Well he got out toward our way and started shooting at cops out the window. Sheriffs and or state troopers with long guns took him out. Period. No eye batting , commentary, just a what set him off? The point to this, I have to wonder how many weeks would we have to endure the he was stopped for being blk and thats why , had a man of color been driving.. It just couldn't be a speeding stop . Just like for those 4 cops it couldn't just be a blk guy that got stuck with a fake 20 unknowingly, take down his info ask where he got the 20. Ask him to come to the station for a report. I believe if it was me with that 20 that's what would have happened.
