I know the topic has shifted and I am late to the party, but I thought this worth a share: One thing I would be concerned about with banning abortions except in the case of rape is the impacts it could lead to. Understand this is not my official position on abortion, just something that I have been thinking about as a concern and would like to talk about. Boy and Girl start dating in high school. Both happen to be 18 at the time. They have been together for a while, and at their last prom together one thing leads to another and Girl gets pregnant. Abortions have been illegal for a while now. Girl's family is very old-school, very well known, and very controlling. Call them rich, call them Catholic, make up what ever scenario you need, but we all know the type. Girl knows her Dad will be furious, and he will. He is the kind of Father that would disown her for this. (A completely different issue, but we aren't talking about parenting this time). She had plans to go to college, but even with her scholarships she needed help from her father, and if he disowns her that dream likely goes with it. Girl is scared, confused, full of emotions, and doesn't know what to do and 18 year olds aren't known for making the best decisions - look at the one that got them in this situation. Whether she is right or not, she feels like her whole world is at risk. She knows she can't get an abortion, and she fully believes if she has the baby her family will disown her and she will be on her own. Her best friend comes up with an idea, if she tells her father that she told Boy no and he didn't listen, Father won't disown her and she can get the abortion. She isn't sure, but her friend keeps pushing her. Girl finally breaks and tells her father. Father goes to the police, Boy gets arrested. Trial happens, Girl's word vs Boy's, and there is no proof other than the pregnancy - and that's all Father needs. Father has a great attorney, Boy has a State Attorney. Boy looses. Boy get's tried as an adult since he was 18 at the time, and goes to prison and labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life. Girl gets the abortion. Now two lives are destroyed, and the Girl lives with that regret for the rest of her life. I'm not saying this would happen every time, but this is a real situation and sex offenses are incredibly hard to prove or disprove. I would be worried this would happen a lot if legislation passes banning abortions with the exception of rape.
