my understanding is that "you" (i.e. church) only has to pay royalties if they make money from the session. As an example - if you owned a gymnasium and played the radio while your paying gym members worked out, then you don't have to pay royalties as the radio pays this - they are the ones who make money from advertising etc. If however, you make up a "best of" tape to play while your members workout they you are liable for royalties as you are making a profit from your gym members. So one can argue - is a church / church choir an organisation that makes money (ok - having seen how much money churches make we can certainly make that argument). I don't believe churches need a performance license to play / perform copyright music in a place of worship (the last 3 words being the critical component of the statement) no doubt there's a lawyer on this site who can elucidate

Now that the November election is over my only political concern is getting the state flag of Minnesota on the ballot for the voters to decide. Soon as the Friday night fishing league is on the organizational outline will be prepared to review with my local rep. Thing is you can get all the signatures but if you have volunteers not gathering the correct information the effort is worthless.
