It’a your life and your family Gary, but I can’t say I agree with what you wrote here. My job as a parent wasn’t to guide my kids to making informed choices. Maybe that came into play when they reached their later teens, but not when they were young. Along with loving, nurturing and protecting them it was my responsibility to teach them the difference between right and wrong, praise them for doing right and discipline them for doing wrong. On many issues, especially issues like morality and sexuality, I had a duty to PREVENT them from making the wrong choice or doing the wrong thing even when it might have appeared to them that what they were wanting to do was “okay” or “socially acceptable”. How many times as parents do we hear “But Daddy, everyone is doing it”? I tried to be as loving as possible, but it wasn’t my job to be their “supportive friend”. My job was to be their parent and make sure they reached adulthood with their moral compass pointing north. My six kids now range in age from 29 to 40 and they still reach out to me for guidance on issues like we’re facing today. Maybe that’s because I taught them that just because “everyone is doing it”, “people say it’s okay” or “it’s socially acceptable” doesn’t mean that it’s the right thing to do.
I think you misunderstood, what I tried to say is an issue between a parent and kid(not my family) is not my issue. Pretty much raised my two kids like you described, but my kids, our family values. What I don't or won't do is push my values on another family on how they raise their kids. I expect the same from other families raise your kids with your values.
