I've been around ppl for 65 yrs. I've worked with kids in high school and young adults in the work place and my kids ages. "Adults " are not what they use to be. Their brains do not function the same as when I was that age. They do not have the same maturity. If you want a fully functioning rational adult brain these days your looking at over 25 going to 30 IMOs and experience. My generation most 25 year Olds were married and starting families. I had my first child at 25. I had already had jobs been earning a living. Half these kids are barely out of college at 25. Life experience drives an adult functioning brain
BTW THAT IS NOT TO SAY some 16 year Olds couldn't be considered adults IF they had life experience that nurtured rational thinking. Like a job , structured life, responsibility a core group of IN PERSON FREINDS. not lines on a screen. Unfortunately MOST kids today have little or none of that. Handed everything , responsible for little and leave college to go back to live with mommy and Daddy. Oh and my daughter was chief of staff at a prominent college. Let me tell you they are not held accountable in college either and mom and dad help with that. She was routinely called every name in the book and life threatened by parents trying to make sure their kids continued not being responsible.
Think of your workplaces. At any given time, maybe 1 in 10 of your colleagues has an ongoing mini or acute mental health problem...they may or may not be taking any medication or seeing a counselor. Some of us had parents with mental health problems growing up yet they hid it and suffered through those episodes with little to no help. Mental health problems which include homicidal and suicidal tendencies can be hidden....until all hell breaks loose. Our ability to contain this insanity is extremely difficult.
I been around ppl for 50 years. I’ve been a foster parent for 20 years. My son was in Afghanistan at 19 he was a grown man. All my kids have been adults at 18. I have treated them as such and they have reacted as such. If people really feel this way quit sending kids to war, giving them cars, letting them vote, letting them drink. I clearly don't have to re mention my childhood. That said both parent at different times tried to kill all three of us. Ya know what the worst thing that came out of all that for me was? A complete lack of tolerance towards those that lack the mental capacity to step back and see what strength such struggle actually blessed them with. Embrace the knowledge they maneuvered through someone else's crazy to attempt to be better than what they came from. So look at life's s-t show and say, " some out there has it far worse than me" and move the F on with making things better. So if that is a flaw in my personality so be it. I every day try to make at least one person smile or laugh and I will gladly listen to other people's problems because venting is a needed coping mechanisms. Wallowing in pitty and a defeatist everything is someone else fault thrusted on you is Not needed, yet too often is the go to for many.
