I've been maxed out for years, even with catch up contributions. Dollar cost averaging over the long haul. I have a small bit of extra room in the HSA I could use or a company NQ DC plan as additional tax deferral options - I don't really like the NQ distribution options though, so I'll max the HSA at next enrollment (thinking more for LT care or post retirement need). Current house is paid off, and we're paying off land we purchased - plan to start building our retirement place within the next two years. Though I've been thinking recently about starting sooner, parking solar (grid tied) system on the back acre, later connecting it to a battery bank and house as backup power...till we build the solar should just about pay for its amortized cost + the land taxes.
