NY's new law: "Individuals applying for a license to carry a handgun will also be required to provide four character references and take 16 hours of gun safety training and two hours of shooting practice at a range. They will be subject to periodic background checks and will have to turn over social media accounts and contact information for adults living in their household." While I agree with the 16 hours of gun safety (even if she's quadrupling the current standard), along with 2 hours of shooting practice (as long as ranges don't require membership)...she is: INCREASING required Character References by 30% REQUIRING contact information on adults living in the household AND associated social media accounts being turned over...in addition to the applicant. PERIODIC background checks - in short...monitoring social media accounts for ANY reason to revoke said license DRASTICALLY LIMITING the places to Carry Concealed. MOVED license renewal to 3 years from 5 years under SAFE Act This is MORE burdensome. This new "Character and Conduct" law is just as unconstitutional but, worse than that...it now allows the State to discriminate against ANYONE whose beliefs that are not shared by the State. I've had a New York State CCW permit for years (as does my wife)... and yes, had to give a rationale for 'requesting' one. This new law is nothing but a knee-jerk reaction by our governor to rebut the SCOTUS' decision of a previous unconstitutional state law that violated the 2A.
