A buddy and I have access to a nice little 25 acre piece of ground that is about 75-80% ag field with corn this year and 20-25% woods. The farmer is a relative of my buddy's wife and shared that he is planning to cut the corn early for silage rather than allow it to dry and cut in mid-November. The issue with the corn being down is that the property goes from good to dead virtually overnight. We have permission to put in anything we want by hand, but this is in west Michigan with cold temps and even snow by mid-November. What can be raked and hand spread for a very quick appearance to keep the deer coming across the woods where we hunt? Will winter wheat or rye come up quick enough to draw deer and survive through Christmas? Suggestions would be much appreciated......
How early are we talking...you could probably get some good growth on something with winter wheat, oats, rye, forage rape, turnips, radish, sugar beet as long as its planted this month. The earlier of course the better.
When is he going to take the corn out? Rye, turnips, radish and crimson clover can be done throw and grow in corn. I'd use a heavy rate and get it in there ASAP. Triticale is okay but isn't generally as readily available nor as cold tolerant and if you do go with triticale make sure it's winter and not spring variety. If rye then make sure it's winter cereal rye and not rye grass.
