I put in a 1/2 acre food plot on my farm in 2010. I planted brassicas that year and the deer ate them down to the dirt. Same story in 2011 and 2012. It was obvious i needed to provide more food for the deer. In 2013 i expanded the plot to 3/4 of an acre and planted a combination of imperial winter greens and oats. The deer literally lived in the plot until it was all gone again, although it did last longer than years past. This year i decided to provide even more forage. So i expanded the plot to 1 3/4 acres. The plot is located in the middle of some tremendous bedding cover, with weeds and saplings 10 to 15 feet tall. I mowed a 100 yard by 35 yard area adjoining the existing plot. The plot now meanders through the thicket past 2 preselected cedar trees so i can hunt it on different winds. A week after mowing i sprayed with roundup. Then 10 days after that (yesterday) i disked the ground, fertilized with 19-19-19 and planted some imperial whitetail extreme in the new area. I picked extreme because the soil is really sandy and it is hard to grow most perennials in it. I wanted a perennial so i could provide a continuous supply of forage. The existing part of the plot i will plant brassicas oats in again in August. We are supposed to get rain for the next 2 days so hopefully it will get a good start. Sent from my C5170 using Tapatalk
I already have 2 stands hung...one on each end...for different wind directions. I actually built the plot around the stand locations Sent from my C5170 using Tapatalk
I checked the plot yesterday 7 days after planting. It is just starting to sprout. We have had rain 5 of the last seven days and expecting more the next 2! I will post the results of week two soon! Sent from my C5170 using Tapatalk
in the last pic, what is off to the right? swamp? lots of tall grass, is that natural? Looks awesome.
It's tall grass and horseweeds. Yes it's natural....scroll up and look at the first picture of when I started. The whole area of the plot looked like that.it's tremendous bedding cover Sent from my C5170 using Tapatalk
There are few things I love more than doing food plots in the summer. Something about the look of a freshly planted plot gets my buck fever going!
