ok so i am going to get a new rangefinder tomorow. iv been looking for a while now and i think i am going to buy the nikon 550. but it does not have angle compensation. i only bowhunt ussually. should i spend the extra to get angle compensating, or is this a good enough rangefinder?
Depends what you're doing. It's critical for mountain goat hunting. You'd be more correct to say that for the average deer hunter it's not needed.
Have a 550 for going on 2 years now and my opinion is the same as the fine folks above. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat and can't think of any instance where the lack of angle compensation screwed me.
I'm about to buy a new rangefinder too. I'm probably getting the nikon riflehunter 1000. Has the same angle compensation as the archers choice but with a 1000 yard range vs. 200 yards.
Nikon 550 or the Bushnell Chuck Adams series I am not familiar with the Nikon 550 but I am sure it is of Nikon Optic quality and will work just fine. The question you would need to ask yourself, do you do a lot of angle shooting? Are you good and judging angle shots? If you have answered "yes" to the first and "no" to the second then I would suggest the Bushnell "Chuck Adams" Series. I have field testing this and it does of angle compensation. Both are great rangefinders Garysbowhunting.com
