I can see where I may have offended Southern people with low IQ and racists. Didn't realize it would bother anyone here.

Fly that flag if gives you pride. But, remember that there is only one reason that flag came into existence. It would be kind of like the US flying the Enola Gay over Hiroshima in prideful ceremony.

Way to pile on late Sota! The irony there is comedic genius. Too bad you don't see it. :busted:

I'm a black man born and raised in the Midwest, living in Minnesota now. I don't feel about it one way or the other, hell my favorite show as a kid Dukes of Hazzard had the damn flag plastered all over the General Lee car they drove. Hate will chose another symbol if you take away the rebel flag, it's not the cause nor root of the problem. It was sad and horrible what that kid did to those people but BLACK PEOPLE KILL OTHER BLACKS EVERY DAY ACROSS THIS COUNTRY !
Where's the marches and outrage for that, as a society we're so blatantly hipocritical it's nauseating to me.

I don't get your Enola Gay analogy. The Japanese still fly the rising sun flag. But Japan, even though they lost and we won, still exists as a country. But the CSA ceased to exist the moment Lee handed over his sword.

After reading through this thread, it seems to me that the flag in questions represents different things to different people. To some, like Roof, it is a nostalgic reminder of racial discrimination. To others it probably is a sign of some sort of rebellion against the established order, particularly to those Northerners who display it.

But I think, to most who display that flag, it represents a sense of community, a common bond among people who share many mutual values and interests. These shared values and interests aren't necessarily unique to Southerners, although it's okay for them to think so.

No one flys the British or the French flag. But I can see flying the confederate flag in cemeteries of fallen soldiers is fine but not over federal buildings or as part of the state flag I think we can do better as a nation.

That's the Hawaii state flag. The British union jack portion is supposed to recall the connection to Britain, I think.

(A portion of the state flag of Michigan commemorates the connection to the Hudson's Bay Company, which was important to the area's early history.)

I'm still find some of these posts funny. I guess I'm at a loss as why a Yankee would fly a Southern Battle Flag.....lol. Maybe they have no idea of what is and to them means something it really isn't. Like racist/hatred. Kinda sad really.

The CSA was formed for one main reason. To protect the southern way of life, which included the right to own and control other human beings. The battle flag was flown to represent that cause. To say it has another meaning is to say that I should be able to wear a white hood and burn crosses and claim it means peace and joy to me. The white flag means surrender. The checkered flag means you win. In my opinion, to say that the battle flag has different meanings is kind of a copout and conveniently ignores its malevolent origins.

Christine, we can thank French trappers for our Iowa flag. I'm sure that is where the influence came from. They have a hard time being very original. lol

Oh I'm sure, I didn't mean it like that. I'm sure people have different meanings of why they fly it. Just seems like most down here dont see it as a racism symbol. They see it as a Southern Heritage, country boy type thing as to where some in the North see it as a hatred flag. I guess it's just two different regions with two different meanings.

The flag in the top left is what they should be most concerned with.
