Ok fine. But it's not like the confederate flag just has been started to be flown. It's loyalty goes back long before the country was "too far gone". The north vs south has always been there has it not? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sure it has, when one group of people tries to interfere with, change, or take-over how another group of people lives... there is instant animosity, plain and simple and it takes a very long time (if ever) for it to go away. Whether it's the north vs. south, settlers vs. indians, or any other groups that have opposition, that's not stuff that just goes away. People can't simply change their way of life or their heritage. That's the way the world and people work.
All ya'll need to stop working yourselves into a lather. Grab a sweet tea, listen to some Hank Jr and maybe watch the outlaw Josey Wales or some episodes of Dukes of Hazzard.
We can't change history, all we can do is re-write it and make it go away(at least that's the way it seems). I think for a lot of people that flag represents fighting back from an oppressive and over reaching government. It's the southerners way of showing non-conformity. Not really unlike the use of the peace sign from the hippy generation. They are symbols to outwardly show their opposition to the views and actions of the government.
Unfortunately I don't have time to read through all these great post and from what I have seen they are pretty good. I am a white southern male who was raised by country type people and to be honest I have no, nor have I ever had the desire to display the flag. I personally am an American who happened to be born in the south. Am I proud of growing up here? Yeah I am but, that doesn't give me the desire to wave a stars and bars banner. Here is why. All of my life I have associated that symbol with one type of individual. Ignorant rednecks. Maybe not all that fly it a r e but, where I come from you were a belly shirt wearing, Marlboro smoking, jacked up truck driving, foul mouthed, ignorant individual that lacked respect and class. Now, go back and read that again. No where did I say racist. I am sure some may have had racist tendencies or said an off colored joke every now and then but, I'd be willing to bet they really weren't in their hearts. In the end I wasn't worried so much about what the history was as much as what in my mind it represented. I didn't care to be a part of that so I never flew it or attached myself to it. All this media hype has done is cause a bigger sepperation again. It's bringing up the race cap all over and causing stupidity among AMERICANS. Should it be taken down from the SC capitol? Maybe, Maybe not. If it were, now dang sure isn't the time to do it. Talk about a royal flush that would cause. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
The issue at hand is flying the rebel flag on government buildings, government issued license plates, etc. People can fly whatever they want to in their own front yards. (I'd recommend the Gadsden Flag.) There were many colonists who supported and fought for the crown in the 1770's. Yet the U.S. Capital doesn't fly a the Union Jack to "honor our British heritage". Why? Because the USA had to fight and win a war to fly the Stars and Stripes. The same thing goes for the Civil War. This is what pisses me off the most. Why does the rebel flag get a pass? I makes a fine, educational museum piece, but get it off the government buildings.
Read an article saying that sales of rebel flags are surging since all this talk started. That is part of the problem. I once met a guy up in Ottawa Canada that had the huge rebel flag belt buckle asked him what the hell that was all about, yeah he was an ignorant racist.
Here are the 50 states ranked in order based on average IQ score. Just saying that the term "stupid redneck" may have been well earned in the South. Obviously, there are some incredibly talented and intelligent people in every state. There are also "stupid rednecks" in every state. But the south seems to have more than their fair share. It's not like you can beat the stupid out of anyone. And, you can't teach a rock to swim. So, I think we are in for a very long road of ignorant Confederate flag flying. 1. Little outdated data there Fletch and most would agree higher education would be a better way of figuring out the smartest states, however those rankings are still pretty close. I would agree the South might be a little challenged on the mental side, overall of course. http://www.insidermonkey.com/blog/ten-smartest-states-in-america-342425/
