I live in the north and can not understand why someone would want one or want to display one of these flags, however I understand that the current American flag is very offensive to some people.

It does not stop there, many symbols, things and words are offensive to some people.

I think people need to be more tolerant or just cut to the chase and give it all back to the Native Americans.

UC Irvine recently tried to ban the US flag on their campus because some students were offended by it...

But, were they American citizens, or foreign students? Or recent immigrants? I honestly don't know and didn't look it up.

I absolutely hate to get baited into answering this type of post yet again. To say that the civil war was essentially all about slavery is on it's face incorrect. Slavery was a key issue or a pivot point but the root causes were states rights, economics and the ability of southern states to influence legislation affecting their region. Slavery was the issue that was used as the rallying cry for both sides but was not the root reason for the war. Your premise is based upon Slavery = racism, racism = war, war = flag, flag = Charleston murders. I will leave out the southern IQ part of the equation. As I have stated in prior posts we are all benefitting from oppressive, racist behavior so don't act so pious about it. The Stars and Stripes was used to nearly annihilate an entire culture of peoples in the name of nation building. A group that was never properly assimilated into american culture as has happened to african-americans. Placed on reservations not of their choosing, outcast and vilified by society even to this day for doing nothing wrong but possessing this land when our forefathers got here.

Look, you can equate slavery, racism, flag in one instance but if you accept it in another without the same arguments you appear hypocritical. Don't get me wrong, I love this country and do not in any way want to dishonor our US Flag but these arguments are silly and in the end will not accomplish anything but cause division. Why don't we just ban all department stores from selling white sheets because it reminds us of the KKK. We're all offended by something, heck I've offended myself by answering this post.

Not incorrect. Slavery was the basis of the entire economic and social structure in the south. The legislation they opposed would put an end to that institution. It was in fact about slavery. Jefferson Davis would have told you that himself. I have visited his old plantation on Davis Island in the Mississippi River. I have stood where his slaves stood. I have hiked the levies they built by hand. It's a humbling experience. Spin it any way you want, but it was about the issue of slavery. The confederate leaders were all very clear on this issue. You can't rewrite their words.

And for the record. In my opinion, the flag had zero to do with the Charleston murders. Please don't put those words in my mouth. I merely think that it is an offensive symbol to many and has no place on government property.

Would love to see that list. Apparently the students in California did not want to "hurt the feelings of illegals". Really? That is an entirely new 15 page thread. I am talking about Americans here. California is kind of its own world at this point. More like Lost In Space.

Muslims that don't like the flag! Well, lets not go there.

I understand what the flag used to stand for. I also uderstand how people look at it as now. I have many friend who are black Americans some who I would die for and call them my brothers. I don't call the flag a rebel flag. I call it the confederate flag as it represents the confederate states. I see no problem in flying it and neither do my black american friends. We live here below the mason Dixon line and I will fly the flag for as long as I'm still alive. Its not about being redneck or racist. Its about loving where I'm from. I also fly an American flag because I love this country take away the flag and I'm still me. The guy who stops to help people and will give you the shirt off his back and the money in his pocket to help you. No matter what the color of skin you have your still American to me.

Its funny how we are getting upset over the confederate flag but we still call blacks African Americans. If you are born here your america period. The only way I see you claiming something else is if you were from a country and have citizenship here.
When I went to africa they were very fast to correct me that black americans were not african americans. That came from a group of men and women in south Africa. Times have changex and this will change nothing if we don't start treating each other with respect. I bet people will think they have won after this settles but it'll just be something else tomorrow and we'll still keep down grading each other

Given the overreaction by some liberals, I find myself leaning towards the confederate flag wavers.

neither, those were non-viable fetuses. But it takes an advanced intelligence to understand population dynamics.

On average, 1,876 black babies are aborted every day in the United States. Yea the 90,000 was a little off must of did the math wrong. I personally can care less about a flag but I care about someone taking a life. We worried more about taking flags down then over 600,000 babies getting killed yearly by poor choices.

You would rather support over 600,000 more children each year in this sinking ship of a country? On whose dime? For many of those women, planned parenthood was the only good decision they ever made. Their choice, not ours.
