All I can say is if must be different in your State. Yes some of the people I see with it are like that.... But 99%, come on. You know better than that. The flag their crying isn't even the real stars and bars flag. Sent from my XT830C
Look. I get the southern pride thing. I get that people of the south see the flag as symbol of the common man fighting against an oppressive government. I get that. But the people that celebrate the flag by flying it on their trailers or trucks or wear it as a belt buckle are generally people that I do not want to associate with.
Folks have the right to fly the flag, and other folks have the right to think it's stupid. I respect the views of members here, I do, I may not understand them, but that's my issue Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
And I guess that's the point I am trying to make, you don't have to associate with them. Easy solution. I don't have a confederate flag - never have, wasn't born in the south, could care less about the flag itself. No one is forcing anyone to swear allegiance to it or pay attention to it so why this is even an issue in this country, I am completely baffled. I see men wearing anything from skinny jeans to over-sized sagging pants. I think it's stupid, but I'm not requesting that action be taken to get rid of it. It's none of my business but it's up to me whether it bothers me or not. What about the "don't tread on me" flag? Should those who fly it be labeled a traitor for treason? No. It's the same as labeling someone who flies the confederate flag as a racist.
Right. I don't associate with them. I'm not advocating for the flag to be banned, far from it. But I still don't know why it would be flying over government offices. That just doesn't make any sense to me. As for being offended, I agree that people get offended too easily these days, but who am I to tell someone that they shouldn't get offended over something? Would you tell a Jew to not get offended over the Nazi flag*? *I'm not comparing the Nazi flag to the Confederate flag as for the Gadsden flag, if the US was still part of the UK, would we fly it over the capital? would that make sense?
It's the feel good issue, people want to feel good trying to make a difference even if it's a meaningless waste of time. And don't forget the holier than thou crowd that want to show themselves up by breaking other down, by highlighting their own professed intelligence.
The confederate flag is being flown over the state capitol, where the heritage and tradition still has meaning. Again, so long as they aren't asking anyone to swear allegiance to it, what difference would it make? It's just there. Period.
I have no clue either. You want to know why it's there and I want to know why it matters. It's just there.
In my opinion, flying that flag is no different than displaying the 10 Commandments. Neither represent the state government in anyway, and both are supported (and rejected) by a certain percentage of the states population. If you allow the flag, then allow the Commandments. The south refuses to live with the knowledge that its heroes were sacrificed in a malevolent cause. Jefferson Davis even offered to keep the southern states in the union after Lincoln's election only IF Cuba could be annexed and made a new slave territory. To argue that the civil war was about much more than slavery, is to ignore the facts. And again, the only reason these southern flags were in existence was because of that cause. So, to say that they represent something other, is to say that you have changed the spots on a leopard. For the country to have been united after the war, the flags should have been forever banned. Now, it has become part of a sub-culture and I get it. I don't agree with it, but I do get it. But, I can certainly see where it is an offensive symbol of history to some and I deeply respect that. To the point that I would not fly one, and I would not approve of it being flown over any government building.
One does not even exist anymore, but hey if the south wants to venture out on their own, you guys have my vote, but you have to take Detroit.
