Ok then why did the civil rights struggle and MLK concentrate his efforts in the south? Not claiming I am smarter than anyone but trying to figure out why these struggles for rights and freedom were concentrated in the south rather than in the north? There are plenty of ag economies in the north or did you forget the plains and farms of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, etc.
Reading through this thread I just keep asking myself what would happen if people were this passionate or driven to get things changed that really mattered. Because let's face it what's this goin to change. Not much, it's just gonna make sure someone's feelings aren't hurt. As far as the original question, idk. Like anything it means and stands for different things for different people. To see it used or displayed and immediately associate racism is kind of ridiculous. Idk though judging by some of the responses in this thread maybe I don't have a high enough education to connect those dots.
"Please explain the confederate flag loyalty to me" Supposed to be a free country, I don't have to explain jack ****. The confederate flag was about states rights issues, slavery just happened to be the catalyst. The American flag was flown for multiple decades while supporting nationalized slavery. I'm offended by liberal supportive bumper stickers and hereby declare they need to be banned because I'm offended. This madness has to stop somewhere....
I think the Confederate flag is part of the countries (dysfunctional) past. Trying to sanitize the past really isn't going to accomplish much other than serve as a temporary 'feel good'. There is also noise about removing any other confederate relics of the civil war (pulling down statutes and such). You can't undo what has been done. Today, the meaning/value behind the Confederate flag varies. It's 'meaning' varied and I think whatever each ascribes to it. Might that be racist? Possibly. Might it be a symbol of independence, rebellion, southern pride or something else? Sure. But wtf do I care what you (no one in particular, everyone in general) think about it? I see this as me asserting my belief of its meaning upon you. Should it fly over a state house? If is part of their state flag, it's the states prerogative as it's their flag. For SC, it's not and in my thinking doesn't belong. But I don't have a problem with it flying over some SC memorial. I grind my teeth every time I see somebody disrespect the US flag (steeping on it and other nonsense). I don't agree, there appear to be laws prohibiting same but not enforced. 'It's somebody's first amendment right'...pfffpt! Our country has its own sordid past, yet the US flag is a symbol of it. Have your opinion on it...you know the saying on opinions. I don't sees how the Confederate flag is any different... A flag doesn't cause a wacko to go off the deep end any more than a gun kills people or a car forces someone to drive drunk. I'm tired of the rhetoric, the crap the liberal media continues to put out there and I'm increasingly tired of the lawlessness in this country. I see it as a symptom of the growing moral decay of the country...it'll get worse before getting better. A flag is not the problem. It's a distraction from bigger problems. I can't wait for hunting season.
Now they got Mitt "Take down the #ConfederateFlag at the SC Capitol," Romney had tweeted earlier. "To many, it is a symbol of racial hatred. Remove it now to honor #Charleston victims."
That's pretty simple. Feel free to click on the link below and notice the population demographics of each state you mentioned and compare them to any state in the south. The answer becomes pretty obvious. http://www.nationaljournal.com/then...mographics-by-state-with-u-s-figures-20130307
Hasn't the crazy bastard basically got what he wanted now? When he killed the people in Charleston, he said, "I wanted a racial war", basically that has turned into the flag fight.
In my opinion, the media is destroying and dividing our country. When some whack-o does something like this, the persons name should not be mentioned and we should not have to hear his reasons, his goals and his whole life story. Tell me about the victims and their families. Don't glorify the actions of a crazy criminal and turn them into reality stars. The story needs to be about the victims of these senseless acts. Don't give these crazy bastards the satisfaction.
This will tick off some I'm sure. Just seen this on Facebook and made sense in a way, although not sure if I agree with all of them on the Flag. Sent from my XT830C
I can't help but admit to a somewhat negative reaction to a flag which is a replica of a war to preserve slavery in this country. But that flag did not cause the death of those nine people in that church. They were murdered by a sociopath. Neither that flag, nor Southern culture, whatever that is, caused that sociopath to murder those people.
Let's just ban everything, we should all wear beige colored clothes, drive beige colored vehicles, live in beige colored houses...at least until someone is offended by beige. What a disappointment this country is turning into.
I guess I'll chime in on this I see everyone debating what the flag stands for and whatnot, and while that is nice, it is pretty much irrelevant IMO. 99% of people in the south that fly the Confederate flag on their truck or house or whatever are ignorant, racist rednecks. That is just a fact. You don't see doctors or businessmen flying the Confederate flag. Now as for it flying over government properties, I have no idea why it would be flying. It doesn't make much sense to me. It is not the state's flag, nor is it the country's flag. All the private companies no longer selling the flag, so be it, that is their choice. No issue there. Most of them are giant, knee jerking hypocrites, but whatever.
What does banning the flag do? Does it solve some problem or idea? No. It doesn't bring dead people back to life, it doesn't prevent future shootings or race driven crime, all it did was piss off a bunch of people to appease a different group of people. There are black people in the south who fly the confederate flag, saying that 99% blah blah and using the word "fact" is absolute nonsense. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/201...ght-to-display-confederate-flag-in-dorm-room/ http://www.washingtonpost.com/poste...ian-heres-why-i-support-the-confederate-flag/
This will be interesting to see what happens when someone from the deep south expresses your opinion. I will guarantee you that the guys in the north flying the confederate flags don't have a clue about the history of this country. Most of them think job is a four letter word. Apparently the same is true in your region. Good luck Hook, you just stepped on some very sensitive toes.
I just don't understand it. What does being offended even mean? No one is asking anyone to declare allegiance to it, no one is trying to make it the state flag, what does banning it do or solve? Government can't make everyone happy so why even bother with it at all? This is a people issue not a government issue. Choose not to be bothered by it and trust me, it won't bother you. Getting government involved is just a slippery slope. Far too many people are worried about what everyone else is doing rather than trying to become a better version of themselves.
I take it your a Left wing Yankee? Your post shows true ignorance of thinking everyone flying the battle flag is racist Rednecks. It would be like me thinking all Yankees are morons. Sent from my XT830C
