Does anyone planting another food plot seed after the beans come up? Just thinking maybe I could get a corner of this bean field with something else the deer can eat and will be drawn to. The farmer is gonna cut his beans and the other variety can be eaten still.... Don't even know if it's possible. Just a thought that popped up.
Lots of people will broadcast brassica's into their beans in the fall. As the canopy goes away and only leaves the stalks, the brassica's will get the light they need and take off.
Check out GrowingDeer.TV (on YouTube), if I'm not mistaken their most recent episode talks about planting in an existing bean plot. They showed it after a week or two and it was already starting to grow. I can't remember what he planted but for some reason I thought it was clover.
Here you go, check this out, specifically around the 6:30 minute mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAzKj0xYABg
Make sure you talk to farmer first. Alot of guys don't want to run green plants through their header. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
Most definitely. Talked to the farmer and I asked him for permission and told him I'd only plant a corner that I chose would be the best corner. He had no problem, but had no ideas lol
Ok I'll check into that. I'm looking for something that they can eat early fall when the beans are gone.
My dad looked at a farm for lease on KY that they broadcasted radishes over corn/beans with an airplane. Dad said radishes were the size of your fist under the standing corn! It's definitely doable, try to do it right before a good rain so you get some soil contact.
Yep Radishes in late July or August should work. They'll browse the tops of the radish and then in late season look out, they'll come back and finish those beans and dig up those radishes.
A few thoughts... Your probably best to overseed around august 1-15th in the northern tiers. If your planting a regular soybean, you will get plant drydown and leaf drop and the brassicas will take off as they now get sunlight. If one has an indeterminent soybean that takes a frost to kill, and if you don't get a lot of browsing pressure, your not going to see a lot of success. What i like doing is using cowpeas, lablab pod beans and forage soybeans together in a blend. I also like putting buckwheat with soybeans on lighter ground. If you have heavy browse, them i like overseeding frosty delight, which has kale genetics and high sugar brassicas.
