Hello all, I have lease in South West PA and I am going to give it a try and plant a couple plots. I did the soil test already and picked out what I think would be a good seed/seeds. I see everywhere now that people say "plant what deer like." How the hell am I supposed to do that? I have a mix of Whitetail Institute's Imperial Edge and Tall Tine Tuber for the field and I'm going to do the Tall Tine Tubers in the small section where there's a transition area. Does anyone have any success with food plots in Southwest PA?? Are these choices I picked going to pan out? Any tips and pointers will help.
Not from Pa. but in every part of the country that I have hunted deer in clover always seems to be a good, solid, preferred food.
I would always mix clover in with anything I plant, usually in strips. I know guys that have planted all radishes or turnips with no results. I like to have clover to get the deer coming to eat they will figure out when the turnips or radishes are ready but they have the habit to come and eat the clover.
I'd plant the imperial whitetail clover on half and imperial winter greens on the other. Good for early, late and Turkey season when the clovers green up
Just go ask your local deer what they prefer. Jeeze..... Deer will eat about anything. It's hard to go wrong with clovers or most any legume. I like mixes and preferably something unique to the area. Good soil fertility and PH will make it more attractive and palatable.
Finally able to incorporate them this year at my place. Still overseeding diversity into them come yellowing though.
