I have been looking into planting an area of Greenbrier on my property and keep it contained to a small area. The part Im not sure about is how to plant it. There is nowhere that sells those seeds around my area. Can you just cut some of it off and plant it that way or is there another way to. Not sure if its even possible...
IM unsure if you can relocate or transplant greenbriar honestly.... if your looking for a thick cover that deer love another option is elephant grass
Well greenbrier is good cover and food source. Im not to familiar with elephant grass. Was really looking for something native also. Is that a native plant?
Got me on the greenbrier question...attempting to find out, sent a couple emails to some guys that know more than I.
Yea its basically a crazy tall and dense CRP style grass.... Great for bedding and still allows undergrowth for browse
Greenbriar usually takes off by itself after it's seed bed as been disturbed or the canopy is opened and sunlight penetrates the ground to germinate the seeds. Greenbriar roots aren't deep, but they are LONG. Dig one up and you'll know what I am talking about. They are so invasive and need so little water, I don't think transplanting them would be a big deal. Not sure on planting though.
If you're looking for some to transplant, COME ON OVER. We have so much of that crap in the woods around here I would gladly help you dig up a bunch just to get rid of it. It gets to be a pain in the butt to track thru and definitely to drag deer out of. I can't imagine trying to plant it myself. I cut it down here and there just to make it easier to get to where I'm going. And deer will take the path of least resistence whenever possible. Good luck with keeping it contained
