There is the flaw in your thinking right there. Pit bulls are not trained to attack. The mother in the article cited by Christine did not train her pit bull to attack grandma. Pit bulls have been BRED to attack. All dogs can trace their ancestry back to the wolf. The many different breeds of dogs have been BRED for specific characteristics. You don't have to train a Lab not to attack. They have been BRED to be wusses as dogs go. It's a job requirement. On the other hand, pit bulls have been BRED to attack. They have been BRED to attack and kill. They have been BRED to be a fighting dog, not to be wusses like Labs. Pit bulls may be as intelligent as Labs or more so. It doesn't matter. Neither dog is intelligent enough to know whether any given person should or should not be killed. When you read an account like the one Christine cited, you can be absolutely certain that the owner did not train that dog to kill. She did not command that dog to kill grandma right in front of her grandchild. Can you imagine the feeling of knowing that the dog you acquired as a result of your unconscionable stupidity killed your own mother? Why in the world would anyone be so out of touch with reality that they would get a dog they have to train not to kill people and hope that the training is effective?
I am a retired K-9 handler (Belgian Malanois). One of the biggest issues I have seen with pits is the lack of socialization with people and other dogs. In my line of work, the fine upstanding citizens I dealt with had their pits as a sort of "intimidation" tool. The dogs generally did not live in a stable environment and was absolutely not socialized in a positive manner with other dogs.
So I'm not going to go round and round in circles with you. So this will be my last comment to your statements. Pitbulls just like beagles were bred for a purpose. Beagles were bred for rabbits, pitbulls were bred for running boars and bear. That's exactly where their aggressive nature came from. Since they had such an aggressive nature, they were TRAINED to fight. Now, I'll reassure you that in no way shape or form was I saying that a pitbull needs no training to become docile. They do, obviously... As mentioned, they were bred to attack...boars and bear, specifically. People DO train pitbulls to fight and ARE training their dogs to fight to the death and have an excessive aggressive nature. Does that mean that they don't have an aggressive nature already? OF COURSE NOT. That is widely known. I did not read this article that you refer too. But did it mention they raised this pitbull from a pup or did they get it full grown? If a pitbull is not properly trained from the get go, obviously you have a stone cold killer at hand...the same way with a wolf, if it can't be taught from a young age otherwise then it'll remain the wild wolf, ready to attack and kill whatever. So as stated before and over and over and over, they can be trained properly and can be loyal listening dogs. The flaw in your thinking is not understanding what someone is saying before you comment...
This is one account. One story. For any one pitt bull that attacks, there are thousands and thousands that don't ever attack people. If you take your kids swimming in the ocean can you imagine the feeling knowing that they were attacked by a shark as a result of your unconscionable stupidity to let them swim in the ocean? Can you imagine the feeling of taking your kids to a farm and having them be injured by a cow? Can you imagine the feeling of having your kids injured in a car accident because you got a vehicle that had a slightly lower crash safety rating? How about letting them play sports and suffering a life-long injury? Should we go kill all sharks? After all they are bred to attack things swimming in the ocean. Why would you ever swim in an ocean when there is a safe pool nearby? There are so many other things in this world that are statistically more likely to injure or kill people. Why have you decided that it's your crusade to pick one generic type of dog and write them off as an entire breed and say they are unfit to live? Look at the number of people that attack and kill other people. You don't see that and go "all of X type of people are dangerous, or all people that live in X location are dangerous and should be put down." Oh look, someone was murdered recently in Detroit. All people who live in Detroit are now murderers and are bred to kill, right? Can we stop the ridiculous generalizing based on a very small number of injuries? Whatever percentages you throw out keep in mind that the total number of injuries and deaths caused by Pitt bulls is miniscule when compared to drunk drivers, murders, accidents, and a ton of other causes of death. You don't have to train pitt bulls to not kill people. That statement is just ludicrous and indicates a far greater disconnect with reality. I don't have to train my Rottweilers not to kill people. I don't have to train my German Shepherd not to kill people. I don't take them to a dog park and point at people and say "OK you can't kill these people.." I taught them, come, sit, stay, down, drop, no, and gentle as basic commands. As for why people might ever own a pitt bull, for some I am sure its a macho thing. For some it may be that they aren't extremely judgmental and see a puppy at a rescue organization that deserves a loving family and a happy life instead of being euthanized at a kill shelter. Try getting off your high horse sometime and looking at the world from a different perspective.
By the way, this is one of the Pitt bull (possibly mixed with Newfoundland looking at his coat) puppies we are fostering. He happens to absolutely love having his belly rubbed and will flop over the moment you pet him. After 11 weeks I can tell you he is a stone cold killer in the making for sure. Sarcasm there for anyone inept at understanding that. Oh and for the record, mom is a purebred American Staffordshire Terrier who was an owner surrender from North Carolina. High energy dog, but she is great with people. She was pregnant when we got her and she was going to be put down while she was pregnant (with 12 puppies).
If you don't want to be killed by a shark, you can simply stay out of the water, now if we could find as safe a place from pittbulls for our children. How do you people just look at the sky and sing La La La, as post after post are made of these dogs ripping people apart day in and day out over and over again? The common denominator being "he never killed any one before", its just a shame these dogs don't kill more of their defenders than helpless children!
That's a foolish statement written only out of ignorance of the circumstances for a dog. Open your eyes Bronson put it perfectly.
Maybe we should open up our kindergarten class for public pittbull socialization awareness programs, and any kids that get mauled can apply to retake the class.
Well for one I happen to be an excellent singer. I try to get a little more advanced than La La La most of the time though. Hmm post after post of these dogs ripping people apart day in and day out. I must say, in my brief checks online I have only found somewhere between 10-30 fatalities caused by ANY dog breed so far in 2014. There are some conflicting stats, but we can probably be safe and say the number of fatalities is under 50. For yucks and giggles lets go all out and just say that all of those were Pitt bulls. Heap a little more blame, kick a dog while its down, you know that sort of thing. Meanwhile Chicago has over 200 homicides so far this year. Detroit had over 90 homicides by the end of May. If only there was a safe place from people for your children too..
No one in Pa has ever been killed by a shark! Of the 88 fatal dog attacks recorded by DogsBite.org, pit bull type dogs were responsible for 59% (52). This is equivalent to a pit bull killing a U.S. citizen every 21 days during this 3-year period.
Are you truely this naive? Or are you just trolling? You realize youre more than twice as likely to be killed by a horse? But I bet you support anyone that chooses to own horses. Over 100 deaths a year contributed to horses and over 2000 brain injuries. Yet many statistics point to there being nearly twice as many pitbulls in this counrty now than horses. 5.3 million horses, 4.8 million legaly registered pitbulls and its estimated there are double that unregistered.
The fact of the matter is, even if Pitt bulls are the most dangerous dog breed out there, you are still much more likely to get killed by another person, a car, or some freak accident. There are risks in life. If you have decided the risk in life that scares you the most is being attacked by a Pitt bull, then find yourself an apartment or a city that does have breed restrictions and move there. Get yourself a job that you can telecommute for, and your exposure to Pitt bulls will be minimized.
Because dogsbite.org is such an unbiased source. "Some dogs don't let go" .. pictures of pitt bulls on the header of the site. Any mutt is automatically classed as a Pitt bull mix...
Also, even just look at the statistics from your oh so unbiased site. 52 deaths over 3 years. Or 176 deaths over 9 years. Roughly 20 per year. From 2003-2007 108 people were brutally mauled by incredibly vicious cows (this comes from the CDC by the way). That equals 27 deaths per year. Keep in mind, cows were bred to be docile creatures, and to produce as much milk as possible, and to have the premium fat marbling in their body compositions. Please tell me you don't have any cows in Pa either?! If so, run for the hills. How can you look at the sky and sing La La La when these killer herbivores are in your area? THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!
We should ban cows and horses, its reaching apocalyptic levels of danger with these things living in this country
