9mm is a couple dollars a box cheaper to shoot than .40, also has a little less recoil.

However the .40 has more KE if you plan to use it in any sort of self defense / home protection capacity.

If you only plan to shoot the pistol now and then, I would go with the .40 caliber. If you plan to put a lot of rounds down the pipe than 9mm may be a better choice if saving some coin interests you.

I prefer the .40 over the 9mm myself.

I prefer the knock down power of the 45ACP! I better have a good lawyer if I fire more rounds then its capacity. :)

Those are supposed to be nice pistols. But I've never owned a Smith that would shoot worth a flip.
    I'd go a Springfield 1911 myself.:D

You may want to check your state's hunting regs and see if you want a pistol you can hunt with also.

I actually prefer the 9mm over the .40. It's cheaper to shoot and easier to shoot.

Also this, if you're using the for personal protection, people always say that 9mm have no knock down power. If someone breaks into your house and you're standing there with a 9mm, it will have just as much affect as a .40. Now if you're on a battlefield facing an adrenaline pumped enemy, sure a .40 would be only slightly better, but as far as an intruder who is not expecting you to have any sort of defense, a 9mm will work just fine.

I know very little to nothing of pistols. However, I have a S&W M&P .45ACP. Thing handles, shoots like a dream...the composite body makes it seem very light for a pistol, and it is scary accurate compared to other pistols I have shot. I haven't even put an entire box of ammo through it being perfectly honest, but by the end of the first clip I was consistently hitting a water bottle at 35ish yards. Fun to shoot for sure!

it depends on what your purpose of owning the firearm is. if you want something to take hunting with, check your state's regulations on concealed and open-carry laws. me personally, i cared a 9mm in the 'Stan and hated every minute with it. while 9mm have limited recoil when compared with other handguns, the .40 cal has much higher kinetic energy. i have a .40 and a .45 and prefer to carry my .45 while hunting and concealed carry. i prefer Glock's and Sig's and carry .45 Glock 21.

    :whip:

Thing is.... if I can't stop someone with some well placed rounds from the 9... I'm gonna beat 'em to death with it. 'Specially with my beretta... that baby has some heft to it. Almost as good as a maglite. :D

BTW, if you haven't already tried an XDm, check it out. Very nice trigger on that gun, and if you must be all manly about it... it's even available in .45 acp. ;)

    Carrying Firearms

It is legal to carry a handgun while
hunting deer during the archery, firearm
and muzzleloader seasons, as long as the
handgun is possessed under a personal
protection permit. It is not legal to take
a deer with a handgun except during the
firearm and muzzleloader seasons and in
    compliance with DNR regulations.

Thats all i want it for , to carry for personal protection , not to hunt with .

I guess you need to weigh the threats in then. This what I carry in the field in 327 Fed. Mag. It will give any moutain lion or bear a really bad day.
