So I have this doe and her fawn patterned for my opening day Earn a Buck Bowhunt here in Illinois . This is a herd reduction bowhunt, on University owned property. We are given a quota number of deer they want killed every year ( usually the number is around 110+ Deer ) If this Doe dosnt present a shot for me on opening day ... I may have to just pick a spot ... Literally Am I above taking a fawn? NOPE, Ive killed them it in the past & will do it again if it has good meat and no antlers. This fawn is a rather curious critter as well
Fawns dont have antlers, they might when they grow up. Not judging either but dont understand why people want two kill fawns.
To each their own I guess. It baffles me that some will shoot ANYTHING to ensure they're "successful". Is it really any wonder we as hunters get the bad publicity we do?
Smaller target to hit... Happy hunting Lady Forge, good luck and hope you fill the freezer !! To each his/her own, if its legal, have at it............. No problems here, wack em' and stack em'..........
I think the bad publicity we get as hunters is singularly generated by a small handful of hunters who act like idiots and break laws. What we're talking about here is perfectly legal, and besides, a deer is a deer. Some people are truly "deer hunting", not "trophy hunting". Also, to quote someone who used to frequent these forums, "It's just a deer". Like you said, "To each their own".
Esuring the health of the deer herd by preventing overpopulation through licensed, managed hunting is a viable solution to a potential problem. As for me, I may not make the same choice but an adult doe and a youngling are both excellent tablefare. I personally have more of an issue with shooting non trophy deer for the sake of shooting them and dropping them off at the feed the hungry site because they don't want to process them. Of course I am glad the hungry get the food but you have to wonder about the mentality of someone who kills with no desire for the meat or who shoots first, then thinks. As you said: I don't think her participating in a herd reduction hunt gives hunters a bad name.
I see no problem in it. I try to pass on the young ones, just to make sure I am not killing bucks. But if I had an empty freezer, and a fawn dropped by I would not hesitate.
Your opinion. It baffles me that some hunters impose their agenda on others. Talk about bad publicity, dissention amongs ourselves??! She is taking part in a herd management hunt and also an earn a buck hunt. I see absolutely nothing wrong with taking a fawn if it is legal and brings that hunter satisfaction. She is doing exactly what that hunt is designed for. Lets all get on the same "team" here and support each other in our enjoyment of bowhunting and quit passing judgement. "To each thier own", EXACTLY.
