I've been following the last of 4 target bucks on this property that still has a rack. The other 3 have dropped. I only have 1 stand and 1 blind set up on this farm, as I received permission to hunt here late in the season. So, I've been using the available ground cover to follow this buck. I set up today in a "vantage" point to glass some movement from a distance and maybe stick a doe(I don't have another buck tag until Jan). The deer were moving, but, nothing offered me a shot. I did have my closest encounter with a Coyote, while hunting from the ground. I was sitting in a small patch of osage orange timber, very thick. I hear pounding coming through the fresh snow, behind me. I turn my head and no less than 15' away there's a young yote coming right at me. I see him as he see's me. His reaction was priceless !!
Even on days that are less than fruitful Hunting is a Great past time. Gotta Love them Yotes! They are sharp and rarely miss anything! Dan
I was on board with the "great past time" thing until I lost dexterity in my fingers and toes, haha. I had a great time, actually. The yote encounter was AWESOME. I guess my set up was good and I was motionless !!... Usually, by 5pm, I'm on my way out because it's too dark to see. I packed my gear up and then just sat there for another 30mins..I was cold, but, I could see clear as day because of the snow.. I got to watch deer movement that I never see because it takes place in the dark. On my walk out(about mile walk) I saw soo many deer. In fact, I walked up on a young buck, in the blowing snow and freezing temps, I was taking a beating on the walk, from wind driven snow in the face- he looked at me and I could just tell he was saying "I feel ya buddy" I had a blast !!
