I actually just ordered the Canon 7D and last night! Equally important to a camera body in higher end DSLRs is the lens, which can get pricey. But chances are if you are committed to shelling out the money for an expensive body, you are serious enough to spend the money on an expensive lens too.

I got my wife started on a T1i w/ a few lenses last summer of '09, she has taken about 25,000 photos so far and is working toward opening her own portrait studio some day... my SIL just bought a 7D about 2 wks ago (she had previous had an XTi) and my wife is planning on upgrading to a 5D here in about another yr or so when she feels her skills have developed enough for it... of course she will need to upgrade her glass then too i think... gets expensive, but she loves it

Yep, glass is the #1 priority (hence the reason I'm still shooting with a 30D :D). I only mentioned upgrading the body to include HD Video as an additional feature. Right now I'm looking to purchase a nice walk-around lens. Most likely a Sigma 18-55 f2.8. What glass are you pairing the 7D with?

to avoid lens swapping we are going to get a 'walk around' lens for wifey as well... we're gonna get wifey the tamron 18-270 zoom, pricey but worth the convenience when we're at the kids football games or out at the zoo... makes for a lighter carry too...

Canon L Series 24-105mm f/4l. Later on I'll get a bigger telephoto for wildlife shots, but after doing a lot of research, you a) can't go wrong with an L Series lens and b) the 24-105 seemed to provide a lot of versatility which is good for me because I will only be starting off with one lens.
