It's a running joke at our club that the best way to get a shooter to show up is to have your phone out dorking around with some weather app or playing some random game. There's some truth to this, I've been caught more than once doing it. What games/apps do you guys have on your phone to help keep you awake or to show you the weather or whatever it is you look at on your phone while you're in a stand? I'm normally checking the weather or following some group text message with other guys doing the same thing I am.
I text a little or check my Facebook. I really try not to spend much time on my phone. You can miss so much so easily!
I do not touch my phone while I am hunting, that is why I hunt to get a few hours away from calls and e-mail. Playing with your phone has got you busted in the past, why add to busts?
as far as staying awake I use 5 hour energy especially for those long afternoon sit..lol The phone stays in my pocket, that is after I text the wife I let here know where I am and that I am settled in.. I do have the "scout look deer app" on my phone and use it to decide which stand to hunt... I have heard that phones have cost more folks deer then just about anything... while the wife and I are in a ground blind together she knits, reads, listens to pod cast and does crossword puzzles..lol While I look for deer for her..
I try to stay off my phone... but if getting the phone out keeps me awake, then out it comes for a minute or two. It's good to know weather... plus shoot a text out to see if anyone else's deer are moving.
I usually go on one of the bowhunting forums if I really get bored. This year, I felt so stupid. I was browsing the forum and I look up and somehow a big doe came in completely stealth mode and was 5 yards from me under my stand. After that, I stayed off my phone for the most part...
Was it you that was snapchatting and missed out on a buck? I remember reading that somewhere (about someone) because I didn't even know what SnapChat was - until I downloaded it, lol.
I actually bring along my most recent copy of Eastmans Bowhunting Journal. I find that reading about other people's hunting successes keeps me excited, focused, and optimistic throughout the day. If I've combed through the entire mag, I'll usually pull out the phone and use google maps to look over the property I'm hunting and look for other spots to put up a stand.
I'm on my phone more than I should be while hunting... Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, these forums, Instagram, Reddit, and Fantasy sports are what I usually browse. I play 0 games.
I get on Google Earth, hope that the update is within the last five minutes, and see where the deer are. Not really. I try to leave the phone in my pocket unless I am very, very bored.
