Smart is the perfect way to summarize Manning. He can read defenses like no other qb I have ever seen. And I'm a Steelers fan!
Thats the dumbest thing ive heard. That loss last year in playoffs was not payton's fault. He's better then his brother when it come's to playoff games.
If we're counting Championships, remember the Big Ben has two (I'm a Steeler's fan), and he's NO WHERE the QB some guys that have no rings are/were. Championships count, sure, but knowledge of the game, on and off the field presence, etc., Peyton is a hard guy to hate.
Uh...who said anything about last year? Look at his entire career. I didn't say he sucks in the playoffs (although he has at times) but he has always been MUCH more effective regular season vs playoffs This is not my opinion....it is FACT Obviously he is still a great player
Seriously? Eli has two rings to Peyton's one. I'd argue that Eli was more instrumental in the playoff games his team won compared to the year the Colts won.
He is the greatest quarterback that we have seen IMO. I think he will be an even greater coach when his playing days are over...and that is a hell of a lot later than most were saying in the water cooler over a year ago
Did anyone else watch "The Book of Manning" last night on ESPN? If you didn't, you should try to catch it again, because it was fantastic. Although I still hate how the Manning family are such legends in NOLA, but hate LSU.
I was watching bits and pieces of it. The studying that he did before games shows why he is how he is. I've wondered why he doesn't have more rings, only thin I can come up with he is so intense throughout the season he becomes mentally fatigued towards the end. Add in the fact that he normally clinched playoff berths early and Dungy opted to sit them out the final game or two plus a bye week. Like some on here I'm a Steelers fan(hate Haley as OC) but I give credit where it is due. In all honesty, I think Peyton will retire in the next two seasons barring another neck injury. The man is too smart to jeopardize his health after football.
Peyton absolutely over a career is the GOAT (Greatest of All Time), no doubt about it. Probably second on that list from the football I've watched would be a guy who NEVER won it all, but still was just that good, in Dan Marino. Surely Brees, Favre, Brady, even Warren Moon are amongst the top, I think Brady, Brees, and Marino are interchangeable in the #2 spot, depending on who's the judge, maybe edge to Brady or Brees as today's game is so much more pass heavy, but Marino did it so well with NO RUNNING GAME to speak of, and though he never got the big win, he's there on my list. Rodgers while great, has to show some more years before he catapults to the top for me. And I can't stand that guy's attitude which makes it harder to want to see him rated that high. He's ARROGANT as hell!!! Agreed, as it's tough to blame a QB who puts up 50points on a good defense if his defense/special teams give up 51 because they are terrible and his team loses the game.... Similarly, Lebron was for years the greatest player in the NBA but just had very little supporting cast in Cleveland to get him to the championship. Didn't change my opinion, he was still the GREATEST player in the game, watching the game and seeing how well he could dominate and play at a level above and beyond ANYONE on the court made that very obvious. Ernie Banks may have been one of the GOAT, but never played on a good enough team to ever even sniff the playoffs. As far as Peyton's football IQ, he's pure GENIUS, there are very few people who will EVER be even close to him, amongst the playing or coaching ranks.
If Indy ever gave him half a defense they would have 3 or 4 rings. The only ring he got was when Bob Sanders went out of his mind for the playoff run. I argued Peyton's greatness with a friend the other day who thinks he is top 3, barring a couple stupid pics, and he changed my mind some. The hail mary last year also may have cost him a ring. I do not think he will be a great coach, if he coaches at all. Can you imagine him trying to understand why guys can't execute the plays, just freakin read the defense pre-snap, change plays twice, and find your hot route or check down each time you guess wrong. What the hell do you mean that's harder than it looks!!!!!
Hes arrogant because hes good. He makes less mistakes then any other quarterback in the history of the NFL. He took a super young team to the SB and beat a Steelers defense full of all-pros, pro bowlers and 2 DPOY's. Im talking about Rodgers of course...who at the momemt IS a top 10 all time guy, just not top 5 lile Manning/Brady. Now if were talking about best in the game right now, Rodgers gets a slight nod over Manning for his mobility, ability to scramble and his strength. Everything else is a wash.
This is why I have Brady over him. Brady got it done...rain, snow, on the road. Whatever the conditions. Dude lead his team to 3 Super Bowl wins and 2 more appearances. Manning has mustered one appearance in the same time period.
Thi Yeah, not to turn this into a who is the better QB of all time thread.. BUT, I got Brady above Manning too. Brady has the hardware to show. He is SO consistent no matter who is around him throwing the ball too and virtually no running game every year. It just doesn't matter. The guy gets is done EVERY single year. I think I could play the slot receiver and do pretty good with Brady chucking it to me. Very close call, probably argue that one forever. Tough to pick which one you would want to have on your side for one game!
Peyton seems SO locked in and on a mission right now. I think he's been fuming over that playoff loss last year all off season and is ready to seek revenge.
Games between the Colts and Patriots during that rivalry's heyday were hyped as "Manning vs. Belichick" and I think that was exactly right. Nobody even talked about Brady as an all-timer until they went out and bought him Randy Moss to lob the ball up to and he throws 50 TDs. Which, by the way, took him 81 more pass attempts than it took Manning to throw 49. That's 2 games worth of attempts to throw 1 more TD. There's no doubt that the Patriots were the team of that decade but Manning was the Colts and Belichick is the Patriots. Brady is the guy who happened to be Bledsoe's back-up when a genius coach was coming into his own. It could have been Marc Bulger or Chad Pennington and they'd still have 3 rings.
I dont think Brady got his GOAT status from Randy Moss. It PROVED he could put up the numbers (look who Manning had, Montana had as well...ect), but he already had his 3 Super Bowls in 5 years at that point. Bulger? Really? And Belicheck is a proven cheater anways
Ok, maybe Bulger was a stretch. But do you think Brady would have got 5'10" , 165 lb. Marvin Harrison into the Hall? People would have still been cryin that he's got no weapons. Peyton takes what he has and makes them weapons.
