Personal experience with crossbows destroys any notion of "wrong vs right"

Up here in Ontario crossbows are totally legal and the way I see it is inside 35yards they are killing machines and for guys without the time or desire to practice as much as they need to they are a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the sport we all love.
I don't hunt with one but many in my group of hunting friends do and trust me the deer taste just as good and look as nice on the wall to me its about the hunt not the kill

It never ceases to amaze me how some people try to impose their idea of what is or should be allowed for hunting style. I still remember the longbow purists going stupid over compounds. Get over yourselves people and be happy that people are continuing the hunt any way they can in an ethical manner. Celebrate them in being good hunters and be an example for how it should be. not a biased Jack hole trying to impose your self onto others.
I love seeing anyone making a clean ethical kill.

After reading everything I wrote.......if it were up to you your vote would be to deny my dad access to the woods to bowhunt with his three boys for however many years he is still able?? A man who has dedicated his life to being a law abiding quality hunter and all he wants in return is the ability to share his passion with his sons he has raised into the same tradition??

I feel sorry for you man. I take it you've never known the pleasure of hunting with close family as you would never feel that way if the law tried to take them from your hunting party.

No one but the good lord has a chance of stopping me from hunting with my dad.

very happy for all those who are now legally able to get back out into the woods due to loosening of the crossbow restrictions.

Do slobs tend to gravitate to crossbows vs. vertical? sure. But that doesn't mean the tool itself is evil or should be overly restricted.
I can say for me personally, it is much harder to shoot a crossbow more consistently accurately than my vertical bow (at least w/o a bench rest.)

Seriously, if NY does allow crossbows this fall during archery...I am going to buy one and kill with it just to piss off the hypocritical haters ....

And I believe in less regulation from the government and people who don't agree with our personal choices when they have zero impact on them. But hey, that's just me.

Glad your father is going to be able to hunt with you this fall, Atlas. Hope he smacks a big one. :tu:

I picked up a Xbow at a show this year and shot it. I thought it was bulky, heavy, hard to hold steady without a rest and loud as hell.

If anyone wants to use a X-box I say have at it. I am not going to carry that big a$$ thing through the thick brush. It is not for me that is for sure.

Atlas I'm extremely happy for your father.....thats a beautiful thing for him to be able to do what he loves to do again

Being against crossbows is asinine.....it makes no difference if you have that in your hand or a compound....it's archery equipment....period

Atlas, I'm glad your dad will get to spend more time in the woods with you and your brothers. I bought my dad a crossbow in September 2009, shortly after he'd been diagnosed with cancer. He was planning on sitting out the season, even though he knew it would be his last. I bought it for him partly for selfish reasons, I wanted....no, more like needed one more year in the woods with dad. Neither of us filled an archery tag that year, but it was and probably will always be the most memorable season I've ever been in the woods. Take away all the big bucks, hero shots and filled tags.....spending quality time with family is whats its all about. Best of luck this fall, I hope your dad tags a giant.

For all the haters, borrow a crossbow for a weekend. All of the preconceived notions of how "easy" it is will soon be a distant memory. They are bulky, loud, and have limitations, just like any weapon.

My opinion is in line with these two quotes.

Heck, after reading this thread, I may let my son use a crossbow to try and shoot his first deer. He may not be able to pull 40lbs by age 11-12 and he can just focus on getting the weapon up and making a good kill.

My thoughts are, if it's legal, have at it. Why someone would have an issue with somebody being able to continue to enjoy the outdoors such as Dan's Nephew, or Atlas's Father is ridiculous. For the record, I only Bow hunt ( compound ) gave up gun hunting 10 years ago ( personal preference ) You can bet when I'm unable to effectively hunt with my Bow I will buy a Crossbow and hunt with it.

Super pumped for you NY guys especially for that reason, Atlas. My dad finally bought a crossbow here this past season and we were able to finally spend more time in the woods together, and hopefully much more time next year. His shoulders are just bad and he never could draw a bow back and hold it for any length of time. Whatever gets family in the field together, I'm all for it.

Have they passed the use of crossbows here in NY yet?

I can't fly cast due to injury, therefore I can't fish in fly fishing only streams. Same exact logic, Richard.
Little kids throw a tantrum until they get their way. Arrow gun hunters did the same, they threw a tantrum until they got their way.

But they are "fly" streams only. A Xbow is archery equipment so should be allowed during archery seasons regardless of injury or not. I have never seen a definition of a bow saying it must be drawn when the target is coming in.
