When I'm hunting the early season, I use Repel or Sawyers permethrin spray to treat my clothing. I use the aerosol cans at at $6.49 for the Repel 6 oz. and 7.99 for the Sawyers 9 oz, it tends to get pricey.

Here's the deal. My wife went to the local CO-OP and bought something to spray on the areas where we dump horse manure to keep the flies away. I thought I recognized the smell while she was spraying and when I looked at the bottle, it's simply Permethrin Concentrate. It's an 8 ounce bottle of 13.3 % Permethrin and it cost about $5.00. The Repel and Sawyers Permethrin spray is 0.5 percent permethrin.

See where I'm going with this? I usually spend around $30 - $35.00 every time I treat my hunting clothing since I spray everything. Boots, shoes, gloves, socks, pants, shirts, 3D suit, etc. That's why I don't get any ticks or chiggers during the early season.

I don't see why I couldn't dilute this and use a 1 gallon pump sprayer to do the exact same thing for a fraction of the price.

What do you think? Am I missing something here or did I just find a great work-around to save a lot of money?

Make sure you get water based. You want the chemical to stay on your clothing and not get washed away with sweat, etc with the oil based.

and you definitely don't want that stuff in that high of a concentration to come off and make skin contact either. won't kill you but can give a nasty rash. had to treat someone on a field training exercise once that got the clothing treatment spray mixed up with the stuff for the skin.

If you treat your clothes with permethrin does it affect them at all if they are scent control? Like will it mess them up and hurt the scent control quality?

I haven't had any issues with the scent control clothing. I always spray my Scent Lok Full Season suit with Sawyers and have not had any issues so far.

Sawyers is scent free. Don't know about other types.
