Talking to some other hunters this evening at the shop and one of the guys comments how hot it was. He said it had been 4 hours since he had finished in the field and his underwear were still soaking wet. The guy was covered in head to toe UA heat gear. I said to the guy just what kind of underwear you wearing... The guys all look at me kind of funny.... He says the same underwear I wear everyday, boxer briefs. I said just "normal cotton underwear"? He replies yes. I reply so you spend a bunch of money on base layers and yet you don't wear performance wicking underwear? All of them said that they had never really thought about it and the all wear their regular underwear hunting. I found it odd that the four of them spend a significant amount of money and effort trying to control scent and stay cool / warm with good wicking base layers yet wear cotton underwear under their base layer. So my question is... be honest! 1. Do you wear performance underwear? 2. Do you wear "standard" underwear? 3. Do you go commando under your base layer?
Early season I wear athletic shorts under my leafy suit that's it . When it starts getting cold ill whip the thermals outs.
i wear just regular cotton boxers under my UA base bottoms but i usually dont have a problem sweating when i break out all the "cold gear"
All my boxers are UA. They are brief style and have the same technology as their base layers. I wear them year round but will wash a couple separate pairs in scent free soap with my hunting clothes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk www.skyangler.com
Well, even I had never given a thought over it for wearing comfort underwear. I always preferred wearing Boxers.
Capilene, from Patagonia. Feels like silk, wicks like crazy, takes a long time to pick up smells. Comes in three different weights. Expensive, but I'm always on the look out for deals. It's what you would want if you were hiking the AT or Everest, so it makes cold stand sits a lot better. I've considered wearing my black morph suit for scent containment as a baseslayer, haven't tried it though. If its real cold, I go wicking baseslayer/underwear, cheap fleece layer, then my scent blocking/locking layers.
Still transitioning from cotton and will end up with merino wool head to toe base layer. This gear is pricy but comes highly recommended. Lots of mfg. . . Lookin at Icebreaker.
I have been trying different underwear this year. What I have found is the synthetics tend to get stinky pretty quick and work good in hot to mild temperatures. The merino wool underwear I bought from First Lite are by far the best in both warm to cold temps and don't seem to get stinky so fast. I will take a look at the Capilene, from Patagonia and see what those have in them for materials. May buy some and try them out.
Patagucci. That store is originated in my home town. I do plumbing work for a few of my friends that work there and just know a lot of people there and I get the hook up on all the dank stuff. In fact I have to go do a small job tomorrow in tirade for some gear. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
I looked at First lite last night some and they ought to be good for the price. I think 2 socks and 2 skibbys in merino may work best this year with "cold gear" top & bottom base. The bank will have to be "merino" broke over the next season in prep for 2014.
