yeah she had a lot of great stuff to say, but mostly she was worried about her culture, tribe's identity being forgotten. cant say that i carry anywhere near as much pride and respect as she did, but i have gravitated more to what i look like than who i am. i look more Black than i do Native Am or White for that matter, who i am is all of them.
I heard an indian say "white man stole our land". I had a long conversation with him. I asked is other tribes just live all in peace with them. He explained of course not. He explained when food was not plentiful or water dried up, there would be war parties against each other. And anyone that knows Indian history knows they were the most brutal assults imaginable. Everybody was taken into slavery, or slaughtered. I am sitting there looking at him like duh. The land wasn't stolen, you lost it. If you don't have the might to keep your land, you will loose your land. Same story has been playing over and over from the beginning. I don't care if its Israel, or Russia or Rome.
Perhaps we also need to change the following city names in the State of Wisconsin as well. Milwaukee Kenosha Waukesha Wasusau Fond du Lac Wapaca Baraboo Kewaskum Shawano Manitowoc Tomah Tomahawk Chippewa Falls Waupun Minocqua Wabeno Winneconne Pe****go Keshena Muscoda Mequon Muskego Mukwonago Prairie du Sac Merrimac Sheboygan Ashwaubenon Marinette
i think the naming of citys, towns, states, lakes and counties is the perfect example of how to commemorate a people!
But naming your mascot doesn't commemorate people or cultures? A mascot name is somehow derogatory but a city name isn't?
There are Badgers who will not come out of their dens because of Wisonsin, and all the Wolverines left Michigan. Well Buckeye's are just worthless
thats what i was talking about a slipperly slope... gosh how do i explain myself better??? so lets take the name of a city.... Kenosha. k-town is the "Anglicized" version of the earlier name. (where would we be without wikipedia???) folks who settled there just took the name of what the Native Am's called it or in some cases named it after the people or geographical things that were around. (chipp falls) now for however reason a team gets a name/mascot that SOMETIMES represents something other than what a Native Am people or tribe (specific or generlized) stood for. i guess what im trying to say is that to me, and only me.... naming after a place etc. is more remembering what was once here. a team with a mascot really doesnt make me think of the actual people who were here. different times back in those days to. were the mascot drawings in programs sometimes looked silly or xenophobic, portraying Native Am's in a bad light. no diff from little black sambo or angelfood mcspade disclaimer: i dont get mad when i see a highschool or walk past a guy/gal with a cleveland baseball hat on, and by no means am trying to change the world. like stated earlier conquest is the way of the world it got us where we are today, but like anything we are all held accountable for our actions and people have a right to thier opinion. if a Native Am. says they are offended then they are, not sure its gonna change much
haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! oh and bears' feelings who are STILL hurt from the NFC champ game =-( (see my avatar)
University of north dakota Sioux is currently in the process of changing their name (maybe) since the ncaa put their foot down. It's a crock too since the 2 local Sioux tribes gave permission to use the name way back when it was adopted.
There's (or at least was) a college team called 'The Fighting Whities' [Slogan: 'Everything is going to be all white!']They made tons of money selling shirts. The town of Pekin near here used have their school team called The Pekin Chinks. The changed it to the more politically correct Pekin Dragons in 1980. I laugh every time I think about it.
