I do a lot of night hunting and don't use a peep at all. The last one I had was big enough to put a coffee can through but I just couldn't shoot in the dark with it so I went 'peep-less' a couple of years ago. What do ya'll use and what would you do to make it better if you could?
I did the same thing about 4 years ago. Big mistake for me. All I used was a kisser button, I had a 8 point buck come out about 15 yards but I really had to twist my body in my stand to get the shot. I never did get the kisser to the corner of my mouth, my pin was behind the front shoulder, I hit the deer in the hind quarter. This would of been my biggest deer to date, but I never found him. I think if I had a peep I would of gotten that deer, but who knows for sure. Needless to say I am back to using a peep. I use the string splitter mini, it lets all the light in at dark, if you see the deer and your sights are lit up you'll see through this peep. Good luck on what ever you choose
I wonder why more guys don't skip the peep. I know Germ doesn't (or has gone through periods where he didn't) use one. It requires a rock-solid anchor. But it does have benefits.
to peep or not to peep I use a 1/4 in. G5 meta peep but I still struggle seeing my pins when dusk settles in. So I am interested in trying different tactics to get more shooting light out of my bow.
Ah yes, to peep or not to peep. That is the question. For me, I peep. I just dont shoot enough to be comfortable without one. My buddy Tom is a peeper too.
If it's too dark for me to use the peep then it is too dark for me to shoot. If I am hunting at night (fox) it is shotgun with a mag lite.
Since i don't hunt at night, I use a peep. I've shot some deer in some pretty low light conditions, any darker & I shouldn't be shooting at all. I did give shooting without a peep a fair shot one summer, and hated it. I was too inconsistent.
Daytime I need the verifier peep to clear things up for my old eyes. Nighttime it'll be bowfishing and there I'm just winging em anyways.
Ryan..... Just asking....but you've learned to be fairly consistent with a LB with no sight, no rest AND no peep. How much of a chance did you give the no-peep on the compound? You've said your range is +/- 20yds (self-imposed). How much were you "off" (on average)? How about with the LB?
I think I get what Jeff Is saying here. Sounds like a not so consistent anchor point If one doesn't shoot well with out a peep. Goes for traditional bows too- farther the distance the more noticeable your form comes Into play when shooting.
Hind Sight!! For shooting in the dark (Techno Hunt) I use a battery powered light on the front sights and the back cross hairs will glow in the dark a bit if you 'charge' 'em with a flashlight.
For whitetails and those who use a peep, I agree with this. Even though I use a hindsight, there were many evenings I was done hunting before "legal" time was up because of low light. However this doesn't help Kelly get on those hogs at night. LOL Just start shooting instinctive.
BTW, I've never used a peep or kisser button (tried one but I couldn't get it to touch any part of my face) and only went with a Hind Sight a few years ago. Up until then I just used a consistant anchor point and got away with it most times. However, when shooting from a weird angle in a tree ('specially with my old bow that had practically no back wall) finding my anchor was tough. Then I started shooting fish all Spring and Summer... and you're talking thousands and thousands of shots with not a whole lot of anchoring going on. (and my bowfishing bows were up to 2" different draw lengths than my hunting bow.) What little consistant form I had.... was gone. A peep seemed to weird to me (trying to look through the string, are you serious????) The Hind Sight just seemed like a much better option.
gotta have my peep! guess i didnt when i was younger but then was just shooting at a target, no a living breathing thing... i didnt get the shakes from that old fridge box.
All I'm saying is.....I think a LOT of you guys (and gals, obviously) could shoot without a peep, if you wanted to (and a sight......IF you wanted to). I can tell you.......I get a couple-5 extra minutes of hunting light, now (AM & PM). Ever wished you had that?
I haven't used a peep sight for 4 years now. It is one less thing I have to worry about monitoring. I just pick up the bow, anchor with my kisser and a touch of the string on my nose, and bam! I do notice a small amount of accuracy loss once I get past 25 yards or so, but it is negligible.
i must sound like an idiot but i been using my recurve for seven long years now fitted with string silencers , but i never heard of a peep ? Can someone explain to poor old yunny please ? Lol
I quit hunting (deer) way before I can't see my pins. I shot at a deer one time at last light. I could see the deer, I could see the pins.... but I'll be darned if I knew where my arrow went when I shot. Didn't like that at all. Plus those little twigs disappear before last light, and since I hunt where I can't do any tree trimming, those darn twigs are everywhere. So I hang up the bow a bit early. I'm a wuss that way. But you certainly can squeeze out a bit more hunting time by using no peep or a hind sight.
I shoot with both eyes open and have no issues with this. If using just one eye though, i'm sure you're right.
It's not target acquisition that's the problem. It's sight pin (or , centering your sight pin housing) aquisition, within your peep (in low light conditions) that IS. I've shot with both eyes open for years. And, this is still an issue (if you utilize a peep).
