I just tried a recipe. The last batch is in the freezer. I did not use baking soda though. I figured it may kill some of the scent. I added some salt to it also. I was able to make one lick out of it. I will let you guys know how it turns out. I plan on coating the outside of it in PB then sprinkle some salt on it. I hope this works.
If you carmelize it like i mentioned afew post ago it will make it into a hard candy you will get what your looking for , thats exactly what they do to make the Acorn Rage hanging licking blocks .
With the heat right now here It would probably work well. Its worth trying. Heck if it doesn't work you know you tried it and you'll know it didn't. It is fun to play around with these ideas and experimant with it in the woods. I can't wait to get a camera and get some of this on video.
Hoosier, my wife and I are going to try carmelize it later this week I think anyways. Thats pretty much what I did with the brittle.
ok i went shopping I got a few things to run some test for a recipe, I got a burlap bag $1.99 i am going to dump some PB into and hang from a tree. as for the rest i am going to try and make a hanging sucker of sorts and also i have two bird feeders 'I borrowed from my yard' to fill with the stuff to keep unwanted animals of the mixture. I will take pics of the brewing process and pics of the setups, I am going to put them in my mineral sites i already have going with cams i have had out for a month or so. And yes crunchy and smooth....got to have something for everyone. also some car vanilla sent trees as i have heard these work well and last a long time. Like i said this is just for fun and i hope to lure deer to the mineral licks and watch the horns grow over summer. I even have two fresh water springs that the deer can have a drink from.
i keep hearing good things about deer and peanut butter. i dont know if its just me but i think im going to try this approach...
Ok i made two batches last night and it does not get hard, boiled the corn syrup and added the sugar and brought back to boil and then the peanut butter and back to boil then turned off and added baking soda and it foamed to almost twice it's size and it's like thick jelly but not hard like a block ? What did i miss....I even put some in the freezer and i can still push on it. Any help?
I hung my PB brittle with the string I inserted into it. I did this yesterday morning and went back to check it just to see how it was hanging. I pulled up about 30yd away from it on the three wheeler as I alwasy do and the rope was there but the brittle wasn't. At first I thought "dang they got it off already?" So I got off anf walked over to sheck it out. Seems with the heat the 1lb block melts and it easy to pull off. I cleared out the leaves under it when I hung it. I don't have a camera so I the bare ground to see the hoof prints. There were a few prints and the block was laying on the ground with what appeared to be a bite mark on the side of it. i just picked it up and put it in the middle of the mineral station. I know anything can get to it now but, I guess we will what happens to it. It is time to refresh my mineral station tomorrow morning so I will check it then.
I left out the baking soda and added more sugar and a little salt. Mine did the same with the baking soda. I did mine in a glass bowl in the microwave. I mixed in the corn syrup, peanuts, and sugar. heated it for 1-1/2 minutes, stirred, heated again for 1-1/2 minutes, stirred in the butter, vanilla, and salt. then back in for 3 minutes. After the 3 minutes I stirred it again and poured it into a bowl that I lined with cake release.
LOL , no matter how much you try you wont get peanut butter to harden to a solid , all you guys gotta do is use peanut butter artifical flavoring heres the link http://www.amazon.com/LorAnn-Artificial-Flavoring-Oils-1-Ounce/dp/B001EPPAVO and make hard candy , and also the secret is the propper amount of sugar , kyro syrup , butter , water and heat , it needs to boil to 310 degrees . I hope this helps
Ummmmmm Hoosier,......... I don't believe you have read a recipe for PB brittle have you? It contains absolutely no peanutbutter at all. Just peanuts. lol I will check out your post though and make a lick that can screw to a tree. My goal is now to just make the peanutbutter a little more solid so that is soaks through the burlap sack slowly and give the some added sweet flavor.
Yeah my Wife makes BP Britle , its soft but crunchy , with what i had mentioned it would be a hard lick , i have a bottle of the PB and you can put a rope in it so you can hang it from a tree , i have a bottle of the immatation peanut butter here , my wife got it out for me , it smells just like a jar of peanut butter . i made oe of these two years ago , but it was apple flavored , it took them about a month to finally eat it all , as it was a big block of hard candy hanging from a tree , you could see there teeth marks in it .......lol
I thought about doing one with apple and PB. I just have to find a recipe for the candy part. I'm not that great in the kitchen so I may mess some stuff up. lol I left the baking soda out of the second batch so that it wouldn't be fluffy and soft. It made it more like a candy. Kind of like what is on the outside of a candy apple. We had a ton of rain today so I am currious as to how is survided that.
