How much would you guess you pay attention downwind of your setup while you're in your stand? Give me a percentage.
20% wind changes direction here like crazy. I can hardly ever get on stand and not have wished I hunted another stand. Then if hunted that stand I'd wish I hunted another stand....Vicious cycle.. I now Forget the Wind and Just Hunt
While in stand, i'm looking non-stop 360 degrees. Cause you just never know. Not sure how to put that in a percentage.
It gets as much attention as everthing else around me. I have had deer (not many, but some), sneak up on me downwind and never catch a whiff.
This time of year, alot. Ive had bucks come in downwind a few times already, im no scent control freak either. FD jr cut across my entry trail both times he came in this year.
The buck I shot this year came from down wind (behind me) and didn't detect me. Although I do hunt the wind for the most part, it's been my experience that if you hunt high enough (20'-25') scent isn't that big of an issue.
I guess that would be 50/50 lol. I pay about 25% attention to downwind. I dont' totally disregard it by any means, but I find myself focusing A LOT on where the deer "should be" coming from. I think if I'm paying 75% attention to where the deer come from 75% (or more) of the time it makes sense. I don't know just one of the 1,000 thoughts that pop in my head on stand.
