For father's day my wife bought me my first 3d target in years. Well as of two weeks ago I had destroyed the vital area. So I went to the store and looked at the replacement cost of a new vital area. I saw the price tag and was stunned. $50. I will not spend $50 of my hard earned money on a darn deer vital target. No way. I took an old sheet and put it inside a plastic trash bag, then put that into a sturdier potting bag. My bow only shoot about 180fps so my replacement vital thing worked just fine to stop my field points. I am not sure how it will work with guys whooting 280fps, but I guess if you wrapped it tight enough that it would stop the field points. I tried to find an old thick dog food bag to put the sheet into, but I couldn't find one. Since I turned over to shooting a trad bow I have become cheapppppp. I make targets out of old dog beds stuffed with old clothes/sheets/cardboard for 0 cost. Just an idea for you cheapskates like me. \
I just don't see how some of these vitals cost 1/4-1/2 of what the actual target did??? Do you think some "Great Stuff" foam would work for you?
Spray foam works great! We have used that in our targets in the past. Replacement vitals are a rip-off! Dan www.stepaheadoutdoor.com
You can get it at any home improvement store or maybe even Walmart. It's a foam insulation made for sealing gaps and cracks. They actually make several different kinds after now looking at their website. The head on my 3D target kept falling off. I sprayed some of this stuff to fill the gap between the body and the head/neck and kept it in place. It might just be dense enough for your needs if you sprayed inside the entire vital area. http://greatstuff.dow.com/?gclid=CImetLzTgasCFQdN4Aodo1KD4w
Great stuff melts to you arrows from the friction. Carpet padding is great. Go to your local home depot or what ever is close to you and offer to buy the cut offs they have. they will usually just give them to you. I do that then stuff it in a cardboard box. It's has alaways been able to stop my arrows. 433.6 gr. total wght @ about 66.5 lbs. so right around 270 fps I have tried BH's on it also but it will dull the blade real quick
Brett...I just found this stuff but don't see a price. http://www.3riversarchery.com/Power.../Targets/General/p/3260__1-3D-Repair-Kit.html
Interesting Donnie. I order from 3rivers a couple of times a year. I might order some of that resin stuff and give it a try. For right now, my replacement target of sheets/potting bag is working.
I've used great stuff foam for a couple of years. When the vitals start to get "voids" where there are chunks missing, I just keep pumping it full of the foam. I overfill it, let it dry, then cut it off to "shape" it back' then spray it brown!
Ive used the Great stuff before, It works OK, I think I'd rather buy a replacement, great stuff makes a mess, and it's not as good as foam of course. But it does work. Anybody remember this pic from the HNI days, I was such a young grasshopper then, but I'll never forget the day I got that group at 60 yards. Not even where I was aiming, but hey, That don't happen everyday... as a matter of fact that was over 4 years ago, and I've never come close.
