I bought a boat trailer yesterday to go with my new (used) boat. It has got a little bit of rust on one fender but the rest is in good shape. It's pained a blue color and the paint has started chipping and coming off. I figured I would sand it down and repaint it.

So my question is what kind of paint should I use? Do I need to primer? And do I need to put on some type of finish or protective coating?

I'm not looking to spend a fortune if I don't have too

As long as it won't be going to the coast an enamel will be fine. Heck Jim I've even spray painted a boat trailer with plain old Krylon gloss after sanding it down well. Instant cold galvinize would also be a good choice.

Thanks guys. Spray painting was the way I'm wanting to go, I just didn't know if it would hold

With proper surface prep and compatible paints (what the trailer has vs what you're planning to put on it), it will work fine. Always prime bare metal and don't skip any sanding steps and keep clean between coats.

i am actually getting ready to start that process next week.... beings i live at the beach salt water is a pain.... my plan is to :

    - wash the trailer
    - scrap it with a hard wire brush to get what i can off
    - apply a solution i got to help seal the rusted areas and possibly help remove a little
-after it is dry spray it down
-paint with rust oleum hammered black paint..... it will help to hid the underlaying imperfections

im hoping this works well but i will post when im done if you would like me to...... ive got spring break next week so ill have plnety of down time to do this

That would be great. I'm going to sand the trailer down tomorrow probably since I don't have to work. But it suppose to rain so I don't know when I'll get to paint

    Thanks for the help guys
