Yesterday when I was skinning out my doe I shot on Saturday I couldn't help but notice that she had already packed on a good amount of fat compared to other early season does I have taken in the past. Has anybody else noticed this as well?

Mine had relatively little fat when I dressed her Wednesday (a small enough amount that it made me note it). My uncle swears that early season deer with lots of fat are a sign of a bad winter so I was hoping she meant a mild winter this year. The doe I shot opening day last year I was literally scooping fat out of her, and we all know how that winter turned out.

BTW, I dont think the fat thing has any relevance to the winter ahead, just one of those things thats fun to keep an eye on.

The bears we shot in Canada in August also had very thick layers of fat (one had almost 3 inches on it's back). The guys up their said the same thing, long cold winter ahead...

You know, I hadn't given it any thought at all, but the doe that I killed in Kentucky on September 19th had quite a bit of fat on her too.

Well the farmers almanac is calling for a cold winter I believe, I can only assume animals can feel it coming. Pretty interesting, I will have to do some research on the topic - if you guys find anything post it so the rest of us can read it and I will do the same.

I shot a buck a couple weeks ago and when me and my dad were cleaning it we were surprised at how much fat was on him. I wonder if that means its going to be a cold winter?

The doe I killed on the 5th also was layered up pretty good.

Funny that you mention it, as I was dressing my buck a couple nights ago I made a comment about how much fat he had on him. Seemed like an awful lot.

Haven't heard of it from anybody else yet. Maybe she is just getting fat n happy. Good food source nearby.

I saw something a few weeks ago about pretty much the whole united States is going to have a bad winter this year and that it is suppose to start getting real cold by the end of this month. I guess we will see if they are right

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. I haven't been fortunate enough to kill a deer yet this season, but I have never seen the acorns like this. I actually believe there are too many acorns and they're not having to travel very far for a good food source which is one of the reasons I haven't had one within range.

This is definitely the case for me, I don't remember seeing this many acorns in a long time, if not ever.
