The coldest game in terms of air temp was the Ice Bowl 1967 NFL championship with a game time temp of -15 and but hovered around -11 for much of the game. Accuweather has the high temp for Sunday to be -5 with a low Sunday night of -20. I don't think it will quite break the record but it will be close but those predictions could change between now and Sunday.

For the record, the Freezer bowl in Cincinnati is deemed the NFL's coldest game in terms of wind chill in 1982 (-51 wind chill). The ice bowl was in the -45 range for wind chill. Wind chills for this game will probably be in the -35 to -45 range based on current predictions.

How the 49ers deal with -5 to -10 deg temps will be interesting.

The Niners definately have a right to feel a bit frustrated that their reward for a 12 win season is a 1st round road game versus an 8 win team in sub zero weather

I still think the 9er's take the game. Packers defense is terrible, they had a hard time stopping the Bears how are they going to stop a good offense?

I know what you are saying and in this instance I agree. Here is the thing though. Let’s say a team plays in a really hard division and wins that said divison at 10-6. And some other team in a weak division with a soft schedule and goes 11-5 or 12-4. The division champ still probably should get the home field. I don't see a rule change being justified at this point.

It kind of goes back to my college football conference champ comments. You have to win your division or you have nothing to complain about.

I also think the 49ers take this one. I don't see any way the packers have improved in stopping teams from getting the edge in run defense, and with no pressure on the quarterback the secondary cant slow them down if forced to pass. Also Rodgers complained last game about the cold bothering his healed collar bone. I am sick of people complaining about playing a road game although you have a better record, its how its set up. Teams know what it takes to get a playoff home game, either get it done or play the hand you delt yourself.

Okay it is absurd in this situation. What do you propose the NFL should do about it?

In most instances the way the teams are seeded makes sense. But every once in awhile something like this happens which is completely backwards. The Niners got hosed.

Disregard division rankings when it comes to seeding. Winning your division can guarantee you in the playoffs, but when it comes to seeding, it shouldn't mean anything.

I probably could go along with that. Might have to think about it more but I think this may have some merit.

I honestly would love to see them stop with the byes. Allow two more teams in per conference, #1 and #2 seeds play the #7 and #8 at their home and it doesn't add any length to the playoffs weekend wise..and league would make more...win-win for me. This could make me support the seeding being only by W-L record not give so much weight to division winners...who knows, I just know I'm gonna be yelling my butt off this weekend for the Packers.

^This was totally off topic but figured I'd throw it out there.

I think the weather gives us a HUGE advantage. Hosed or not, if we win, nobody is going to care about the seeding in a few weeks.

The weather is an advantage to the Pack in the sense that they are obviously much more used to playing in cold temps

But then again....the Niner's power game is very well suited to bad weather

I guess we will just have to see what happens

Alot of times when it is this cold it comes down to who wants it more. Who is willing to still play aggressive when everything hurts more. The ball is hard. The fingers are numb. Some teams will go into survival mode and shut down. Others embrace it like the NYG.

Part of playing football is playing in any weather. Im sure Green Bay is a little more adapt to the cold but I don't think anyone can get used to -30 degree temps.

Im picking Green Bay for this one.

Pack might be a little more used to the cold but the players aren't all from WI. Lacy doesn't care for the cold. Most of the players are from the south. I do hope it effects the niners more tho.
