They should adopt the special regs archery season statewide and add sunday hunting. There is NO legitimate argument to prohibit sunday hunting. Period, end of discussion. Our special regs archery runs mid september to the saturday after thanksgiving. It's awesome and how it should be.
well the only way I can not let the seasons drive me nuts is to be happy when someone tells you they are quitting hunting. this means less money for the pgc and one less hunter to compete with in the woods. in warren county they are quitting at an alarming rate. most all of my friends have all quit now. not many kids have any interest either even with the bogus mentor program. some of the crossgunners I know have had enough as well. once the hunter numbers get low enough then the pgc will have no choice but to change things to try to correct the problem. we don't have many oput of state hunters coming here either. I remember the caravans coming in from ohio every year. they quit coming as well. seems like in some of the areas I hunt the pgc has given up on the pheasant program and are turning the land into deer habitat. bigger bucks will bring in hunters. isn't that the reason we go out to the Midwest? until one thing forces another thing to change all we can do is wait.
I'm not for or against the pheasant program just noticing how they are prepping the land. they used to plant habitat for birds only to see it now a field of brush resembling a clearcut. they even mowed walking paths so the bird hunters didn't have to get wet pants. even those are all grown up. not trying to start a debate but was wondering your thoughts of how the pheasant program helped the deer program? just curious is all. like I said it doesn't matter to me one way or the other.
i hunt were the pheasant hunting is hardcore. so i did some research on pheasant & whitetail deer and found out that the deer benefit from the some type of management. meaning: mowing, control burns, same food type. pheasant also eat ticks...yeh! less tick better deer health qdm had an article on this topic about 2 years ago.
I see. thanks for explaining. in my area we only have habitat that is created on gamelands. they don't stock on private land here. plus winters are so bad in my area they can not self reproduce.
Also a PA hunter. Has the issue of a longer archery season been strongly pursued with the PGC? It makes no sense to end archery season in the middle of the rut Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
seasons in PA have always revolved around the gun hunters. I can see in the future that it will change to favor the archers more.
i would really like to see that & Sunday hunting no matter what type of land you hunt (public or private )
Agree, this would be great across the state. 100% for Sunday hunting, especially now that my kids have sports most Saturdays.
THAT'S WAY THEY SHOULD ALLOW SUNDAY HUNTING! kids have school, sports, work it does not give them the chance to enjoy the outdoors much!
How long is the PA season? Here in MI it's Oct 1st - Jan 1st with 2 weeks of gun hunting Nov 15th - 30th. Although they do allow hunting on Sunday on public and private land. I don't hunt it. Sunday is a holy day it's NFL football day!
I spent one season hunting public land in PA as my family lived there for a year. I had a blast. I found a spot (100 to 200 acres or so) where I didn't see another hunter over about a two week period during the rut. I didn't arrow the biggest deer but killed a decent 8 point 2 year old. If I lived closer to that property I would hunt it again.
I know wonder how PA is going to handle a very poor bear kill? last year they killed about 3200 this year was only 1600 total. this is what I was saying, one thing will force them to change another thing.
Unless you're in a Special Regs WMU. I forgot again this year, but in 2B, 5C, and 5D, archery is open from Nov 27th - Dec 9th!!! I thought I was done on the 25th, but since I've got a 9:00AM Dentist app (no work) tomorrow morning, so I can hunt after that until dark. It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings!
Living in 5C gives me 4.5 months (Sept 16 - Jan 27) of bowhunting for doe or buck, with only a two week break in mid December. That's pretty good. But I can understand the complaints from other WMUs. Being cut off mid-rut stinks. Personally, I like the Sunday rule. Divorce rates would increase significantly if we could be in trees ALL weekend. Besides, I like scouting and checking cameras on Sunday afternoon, knowing I won't wreck someone's hunt .... or get shot at.
