Any fellow pa hunters gearing up for late season? Cold, snow, and skittish deer can’t wait!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I'm gonna try, I really wish we could be out there now, the conditions are gorgeous! This is the first winter I have hunted this property and it borders public land. I am not quite sure if that is a good or bad thing yet. Nobody else had permission to hunt it but that doesn't mean much to people, especially around here. I'm fortunate enough to not have to deal with skittish deer from pressure, but I can say with a lot of certainty that previous hunting pressure isn't the only thing that makes them skittish this time of year. I think the rut, and just being worn down, plus the added challenge of any noise you make being amplified in cold conditions... its a tough game. I think with the deer going back into survival mode and not being very tolerant of much makes it a challenge. I'll be out there trying to fill both my tags. I just got some pics of a few shooters to keep me occupied as well. I actually love the late season.
I've never hunted late season. I am a total wimp when it comes to cold/winter. I only have a buck tag (got a doe in rifle) to fill - so I'm placing a camera out back of my house to see if the big guy is coming around during day light.
I'm in 5C so I can use a shotgun for doe all late season. I'll be doing that, unless the bucks show back up on camera, then I'll grab the bow.
helping my buddy getting set up in the area where I got tons of giant buck pics this fall. still tons of acorns. setting stands this Saturday.
I put a cam in last Thursday to see what has survived the early season. I'll check it Christmas Eve to see if it's worth my time hunting the area. We got a couple 3"- 4" snows, so I'm hoping I got some kind of pics. I enjoy snow pics.
I'm also in SE PA. Have you been out after the snows following tracks? I've been really surprised at where those deer actually go. I'm new to all this so it's been a great learning experience.
Boy I wish I had the acorns you have. A lot of the area I hunt was sparse this year and they have most of them cleaned up by the middle of October.
if you need a hand let me know. I'm here jealous of everyone that can go out. we had way too many. really slowed the deer movement compared to normal. might pay off now.
I actually seen where a buck was feeding in the acorns when his rack was leaving impressions in the fresh snow all around where his head was. it was cool to see.
Yes, I've been out looking for tracks. It really is surprising some of the routes they take, you wonder how they can get through some of that thick stuff!
I will try to get out a few times, but I'll be honest...I'm more excited about getting my feet on the ground to start scouting our new property.
well, I missed a doe last night. 25 yrd and I held center of chest. Shoulda held low cause she dropped right under it. All I got was a little fat on the arrow, no blood Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
