Here are some of my first pics with my P32 homebrew cam. Don't mind the "blotches".....I think it's fog from the sun warming up the external glass. Also, I know that guy that walked by....he has permission to hunt that property but I thought I had gotten away from him.

Homebrew guys: Am I getting the quality I should be from a P32?

Looks pretty good, Finch! The P32 is so nice to hack. What are your camera settings?

Oh, and welcome to the addiction!

I'm going to be building an IR P32 with a slave flash this winter.

Good looking pics but you might want to watch your camera aim. It looks like it's pointing into the sun, that will always affect them. That's a great buck by the way.

I just used the settings that the guys on AT recommend for all P32s. I can find them if you like but I have a feeling you know what they are. I have a question for you....what is the point of an IR camera that has a slave flash? Am I missing something or does the flash defeat the purpose of having an IR? I saw your post on AT but just didn't ask.

Randy...no, that's not me but I do know the guy and he has permission to hunt that property. I really don't think he would take my camera.

Jim...thanks for the tip. I thought I had it positioned accordingly but must have misjudged. I hope to have some better photos in the next couple weeks.

What Jim said. Try and point the camera north or south if possible.

The slave extends the flash range of the camera's on board flash which gives you a much more clear photo with a larger cover***e area. You cover both the camera and slave flash holes with IR filter material, so it's not visible.

Thats what I was missing.....the filter material. Could you just put an IR filter on the camera's flash with no slave? I guess that would weaken the flash to nearly nothing during night time pics, right?

I might attempt the same build. I want to get away from flash cams.

Yeah, you could, and a few guys do, it's just a weaker field of view.Either way, you have to hack the camera to become sensitive to IR light.

Thanks for the clarification! I'm hoping to find a deal on a P41 and make it an IR with a slave flash...now that I know what it means. :D

Yeah, the P41 is a NICE cam. Very fast, and like the P32, you can "no-glass" hack it, and I was considering trying this method, but a few guys warned against possible damage if you don't get it just right.

I have 2 with a p41 and one with a p32. Like was stated earlier, your pic quality would improve if you turn away from the sun.

Matt, so which hack are you trying? Replacing or scraping the glass? I still have yet to get my S600 out. I'm leary of doing it now since it's a flash cam and the flash can be seen a good ways this time of year leading unsavory characters to investigate. I'm planning on doing a P41 or P32 IR hack as well. Definitely keep us posted on how yours goes.

Finch, great looking pics. Great job on your first homebrew. Hope mine goes as well.

I think I'm going to just replace the glass on mine. I'm considering also hacking it do do daytime color, and IR night photos. Still sorting out the details and what I need to do that as well.

    Nice buck there Finch!!

    Matt,

On these homebrews Is It possible to build these cams with a black flash meaning no lights on IR pics too? This Is the sole reason I went to a Reconyx cam. If so I'd be Interested In building one of these too.

Yep, I believe the IR filter mask you place over the flash holes (cam and slave) filter out any light in the visible spectrum. Could be wrong, though, I'm just getting started with this type of cam:D
