I think It was the S to SW side of Livingston. It's been 8 years since I've been to this spot and I've only been there just once so I'm not 100% sure on my directions so I could be wrong. I know this much that It wasn't just to far out of town where we parked the truck to start our 7 mile hike In. It is probably the most beautiful country I've ever been In. It wasn't just too high, 6,000' to 7,000' I think. It was thicker then heck and It made for tough hunting. Downfall every where but man was there elk around. There's also a few grizzlies In the area. They take the problem grizzlies from Yellow Stone and set them about 100 miles from where we were hunting. My cousin I was with out there seen a sow and 2 cubs about 400 yards away below him, they were Grizzlys.
Jim, I'm sorry to hear that and that's a damn shame. I think I'd be rolling some outfitter on that one. I can honestly say, your a better man than me to handle it so calmly at the moment of truth. I would not have been so nice to that clown. It's obviously apparent what happened.
Dam, i dont hink i would be back there again. Man i bet that bull IS in your head sorry to here the tough luck.
That sucks, Jim. You're a better man than I. . . the doctors would still be trying to remove my boot from his arse right now!
That really sucks. It's a shame that there are guys out there like that and they have jobs guiding. The only thing that guide would have heard if I were in that situation would be: Thwack! "Huh, what did you say?"
as expensive as an outfitted hunt can cost, I wouldn't be happy with anything less than a 350+ elk... this guy is obviously a first class azzhole... I would be talking to the outfitter big time, and demanding a partial refund at the very least... i'd be half way tempted to file lawsuit since that guide is a representative of the outfitter...
We are currently weighing our options and determining what the next step should be after we give the outfitter a chance to try to make things right. As far as not happy with less than a 350"+ elk... that is way out of control in all reality, especially for a bowhunt. There is a reason that P&Y elk are 270". There are far fewer 400" elk killed than 200" whitetail, so a 350" elk is a very high 100's (say 170's-180's) in the whitetail world. They just don't live behind every tree or even in every game unit. This being my first, and definitely last, guided hunt all I wanted was the guides best effort and for my knowledge and skill to be the limiting factor, not his. Unfortunately, none of this was the case.
Not to get off topic, but that is one reason why outfitters get a bad rap.....unrealistic expectations. When clients call me and tell me that they won't be happy unless they kill a 400# bear....I tell them to keep looking, as I won't take anyone with unrealistic expectations. Good luck and I hope the outfitter makes things right for you.
That is by far a horrible experience. Its a shame that the service by one can ruin for you and other solid good outfitters. Question I have, how did you learn about these other hunters on their prior opportunities ? Another would be how did you learn of this outfitter and decide to go with them Personally I request ALL hunters for the past 3 years...not just the successful ones. I know this was not what you expected
I learned of the previous hunters' results from the guide we had the rest of the week. I first heard of this place from a well known TV show host on his program. He had hunted the home ranch of the head outfitter for at least 4 years and has been successful every year. We hunted a different ranch b/c the outfitter stated that the odds of getting an elk were the same and this place had MUCH bigger bulls. Seemed like a no brainer at the time. He said the only reason more people didn't book there was b/c the accomidations were pretty rough compared to the nice log cabins at his home ranch.
