I am just curious how many guys are traveling out of state to go to prime whitetail country. I make a couple of trips a year out of my home state of Michigan to chase whitetails in Ohio myself. I have looked at a couple of other states just havent done it yet. So my question is, who is traveling, what state you from and what state you like to travel to for that chance.
DIY hunts into the unknown with friends are certainly fun and a good way to test your skills elsewhere! The tactics used in one region may not work in another. How could it hurt to increase your repertoire? Outside of Colorado, I'm DIYing it in S.Dakota- Blackhills region-tons of public land and huge woods. I also plan to DIY hunt in Illinois, Alberta, Nebraska, and New Mexico this year.
I defintly agree with you. When I travel to Ohio I am hunting DIY style and plan on keeping it that way!
I am traveling to an unknown destination at this point. My plans are to drive to Kansas and hunt in the great bend area with a friend, but if that falls thru I will probably go to Indiana to try and find some public land or knock on some doors to try and get some permission to hunt .So at this point I have no idea where I am going to go, I just know that I am going to the midwest in November(every year for the rest of my life if possible). I have one friend who says he wants to go with me, if he goes fine, if not I will go by myself.
I live and hunt in Ohio and traveled to northeast KY last year 2 weekends to chase a few deer. I may make it down there again this year, not sure yet.
How do you DIY in Alberta? I am accumulating points in Iowa, but IL suits me just fine in the mean time Dan
Easy Dan, you're invited by a host. Sure we'll be hunting in the same area, but there's no reason to hold hands.
No worries! Wasn't attacking your prowess I Never hold hands any where I have hunted, even in Canada. I guess I had a Host too Dan
Don't you find it funny Dan. I mean, bow hunting is such an individual sport. More than one cook in the kitchen spoils the soup for the most part. It is hard to hunt side by side, on the ground, with another bow hunter. But naturally, people assume this is what happens when someone hires an outfitter or visits a friend. It is so far from the truth. I have hunted moose, caribou, bear, and wolf in Canada without a guide. At this point, I imagine there's no reason to hire a guide for white-tailed deer. Were you successful in Canada? I would love to hear the story.... Maybe you and I can start a new thread. "Ways to hunt Canada without a guide". The indian reservations would be a good place to begin the discussion.
