I have been looking at a new set of irons now for a year now. Here is my issue, no matter which brand I try, which model, I hit the six iron pretty much the same distance, between 160-170. They are all pretty much same flight also. A little left to right(I am LH).

Irons have not improved since 1997? When I got my Titliest 981's.

I cannot see spending x dollars for the same performance.

He's all talented out:p Jeff that takes time, time is what I do not have in the summers.

I have softball, tee ball and Hillary made the all star team, so now even more time is gone.

I agree it's the best way, and yes I was trying to buy 10 more yds:)

Check the lofts and shaft lengths on the different 6-irons of the clubs you're interested in. Today's 6-irons are yesteryear's 5-irons (or more).

    I'm betting you'll see a disparity.

Can you buy 10more yds from your 6-iron? Not really. Can you buy a less lofted 6-iron (and hit it 10yds further)? Certainly.

    But....what have you REALLY done?

So your 9-iron becomes an 8 (or less - when hooded). Nothing wrong with that.....but most amateurs aren't consistent enough ball strikers to get away with it.

Hooding down your irons is a recipe for the S-word.

Yup, I bought a new set of Callaways a couple years ago. The did a 1 degree upright. First thing I noticed was I LOST 10 yards from my old Black Ping Eyes. At first I was really disappointed. But, then I started adding a club. I found out it wasn't exactly 10 yards lost....but close. I also found where I used to hit a HARD Pitching wedge a nice controlled 9 iron is the ticket. Much better. I still today say, with my old clubs I'd hit a 5... I'll hit the 4 smooth. NOPE, my game isn't a lot better but that's because I don't practice or play enough. LOL BUT, I'm totally comfy grabbing the extra club and swinging smooth.... and watching it go left...right.. or where ever. LOL BUT, I do feel better with my game. My mind and 66 year old body let me down a lot.... but my game is better. LOL

Well hell, I know the Indian sucks. I never had a lesson. I grab the club and swing. I can shoot 83-94 in the same day. LOL I've been in the 70's a couple times but not recently. On a strange hard course I can push the 100 envelope really quick. When I do it's usually something like a 42 out.... 52 finish. LOL If I go to the range and hit balls 5 or 6 days before I play my first round it helps a lot. LOL

I bought the Callaway X-Tour irons a couple of years ago and love them. I'm not saying that they are longer, but they sure are an easy hitting, forgiving club. I didnt gain length, but do feel like I gained consistency and lowered my score by a stroke or two.

Who cares how far it goes..golf is a game of how close it gets. Hit the 5 instead of the 6 you only mark scores on the the card not what club ya hit.

Also what's important to you feel or distance? I can get you 10 yards by changing balls.
Knowing your character you play either Pro V's or Callaway Tour..and you wouldn't hit a Nike if it was the last ball in your bag!

Shhhhh. Far to early in the season to even start uttering such a word.

Very true. I get a kick out of people always wondering what other people hit or brag how far the can hit a certain iron lol. I'm above average in length with all my clubs. When I play a round of golf I rarely "max out" any of my clubs throughout a round. I'll hit stingers off the tee, knock downs, controlled fades-draws etc... I'll let some tee shots loose where it dictates, but golf is more of a game of targets not distance. Want more out of your game? Drop about a million balls everywhere you can see within 100 yards (including the green) and figure out how to get it in the hold as soon as possible.

The newer technology may seem like they are giving more distance. The clubs favor off center hits more than the old technology. Not really a terrible thing for amateurs to have. Thats' more of what you're buying. Did you get on a launch pad/swing monitor of any kind? Make sure the shafts are going to fit your swing. That alone can make a big difference in a club.

Great advice. I'd add, though.....drop 'em one at a time......and drop the next one when you've holed the first. Golfers (IMO) get WAYyyyyy too hung up on beating balls and way too little time focusing on the object of the game.......which is the fewest strokes as humanly possible.

My buddies called me "Scrap", when I was playing. That got shortened from "Scrape". I could scrape a 71 out of a 76 on a whim....lol.

Where are the VAST majority of a golfer's strokes taken? Within NY's 100yd example.

Who cares how far you hit it?

When people used to say something to me about how far they'd hit a drive by me......I'd just ask them "how do you stand to par?".

Wanna be a better putter? Work on your sand game/chipping. 4 footers are proven to be eaier to make than 10 footers. Extrapolate.

Yep.. that's great advice too. I see it everyday. People on the range or practicing on the course just bashing ball after ball after ball. Almost like they're trying to get as many reps in as they can. Hurrying up to figure something out in their swing. When I practice I treat each and every ball I hit like it's a shot that is going to win me the US Open. Pre shot routine, alignment, grip, mental focus, trigger, etc........ Simulate the real deal every time you hit a ball IMO. Actually same holds true for archery.

Very true as well. And actually how many people do you see on the practice green at a local club practicing putts inside 10 feet (especially 4 footers)? Hardly any. I practice putting those things inside 10 feet until my fingers bleed. Learn how to knock those down consistently and watch your handicap drop quickly.
