Back when I had lots more money, I used to order shrimp fresh off the boats in the Gulf and have it overnighted to me. It was awesome. I'll happily eat wild carpy things before I buy farm-raised fish from overseas.
I know the picture of those chickens packed in like sardines is supposed to sadden/disgust me...it just simply doesn't. Maybe i am too hardened, who knows. Chickens taste delicious regardless how much wing room they have.
Those pics are of laying hens. The thing about them being packed like that in a building is that the eggs are not as tasty, less healthful and easily contaminated with salmonella and other pathogens. Obviously, I like chickens and don't like to see them crammed into the legal 67 sq inches per bird for their whole miserable lives... but I don't support laws banning it. I'd rather see people make the choice for healthier (and more humane) eggs on their own. I do eat some commercially raised chicken but without a doubt, pasture raised meat chickens taste better. (think about that 67 sq inches... a 8.5x11" piece of paper is 93.5 square inches. That's 26.5" sq inches bigger than what a commercial hen will live her life on.)
I see "healthier" options in the grocery stores (Kroger, etc) but don't necessarily trust what they are advertising. Like Laura Lean meats...are these really hormone and antibiotic free? The naive part of me says, "sure, says so right on the package" but I'm still skeptical. http://www.laurasleanbeef.com/
They're chickinsfor goodness sakes, I have to agree with you kind sir. It's amazes me how humane some folks want to be just before they kill the chicken and BQ them on the grill. It's a Chicken
You guys are not reading very well. It's not the humane part..... at least to me. It's the hormones and antibiotics they give to the animals to raise them in that environment. It's not something I want to eat or feed to my kids. When the chickens are in that environment and hanging out in each other’s feces all day long they have to give the animal antibiotics to keep them healthy. They give hormones to them to get them to grow faster.
I can see the leeriness w hormones as people traditionally are skeptical of them.... But since when have antibiotics been such an evil terrible thing? Enlighten me
How the hell is McDonalds going to get their all white(cough cough) chicken nuggets so tasty without a little help? BTW we were eating organic way before it became cool
