I do want to say that since my sister has started organic, she has no more joint pain, intestinal issues, or sleep issues...

    Placebo affect?

Oh yeah we all eat raw organic eggs but that's because I have a friend with 18 chickens LOL. She practically pays me to take eggs.

I'm going with placebo effect. I've known people who have gone the natural/organic/whole foods route. I believe them when they say they feel better and are healthier. But I think the key is that they are eating healthier all around. McDonalds doesn't sell organic quarter-pounders so they can't eat there. Organic meat costs a lot more, so they don't eat as much. And KFC doesn't serve organic fried chicken.

Americans of Asian descent have a life expectancy ten years longer than Americans of European descent, 87 v. 77. Eat like we do and I'll bet you can add to your life expectancy and feel healthier and stronger as well. My husband admits that he feels better, his arthritis doesn't bother him as much and he's stronger since he married me and eats my cooking. ;)

Yeah I'd say so... the thing is, when people typically make this switch it is because they hit a certain point in their life they aren't happy with.

Many are slightly overweight, or out of shape... They tend to make the entire transformation. They go from eating essentially whatever they want and not exercising, to eating a totally organic and natural diet while watching portion sizes and working out like a nut. Then months later, ohhhh the wonders of that organic food! lol

I just think people who eat a HEALTHY but not all organic diet and works out regularly will be in no worse health than one who goes the organic route and works out at the same rate. BUT, that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the more organic route.

She is and has been in better shape than you, I am guessing ..she has always ate healthy, worked out and never 1 pound overweight...

The only transformation was eating organic ..she always ate "good" as we all would define it .. that was her only change ...and no GMO foods .. I suppose if her health changes stick ... it was not a placebo effect ... if they return, they were ....

I do wonder how much you have all read up on it, tho .. I believe Christine and Dan have by there comments and I can see others have or are delving into it even now..... I will continue my research and comfort myself with Ben and Jerry's supporting the GMO labeling debate :D

I have learned not to get too involved in a discussion about food. It's like discussing religion.

I will mention, once again, that the life expectancy of Americans of Asian descent is 87 as opposed to the 77 of Americans of European descent.

lmfao on the in shape comment. I've always been a terribly out of shape kid. I still eat terribly by many standards but have watched what I've ate for a little over 2 months now and the lbs and fat are literally falling off.

I guess what I'm getting at is without her knowing, switch out your sisters green peppers and corn with ones protected by insecticides while grown and I can all but guarantee her joint pain doesn't return, but by all means believe what you want.

I guess it depends on what you want. If you go to kroger or another local grocery chain, buy organic and go home and wash it...see all those beads of water, yep, been sprayed with something.

I try and eat clean, ezekial bread, almond butter, cottage cheese, meat and veggies and go to the gym 4-5 days a week. No 4 wheeler, walk alot during deer and turkey seasons etc...go to a class reunion, and my group I still run around with, we look and feel pretty good for our age. 33 by the way, our peers, yeah, not so much.

I think everything has some merit, but I also think your mind is the strongest thing you have. I turned a guy at work onto Glucosomine Chydroiton(sp?) (for joints) He is extremely overweight and finally doing something. He immediatly complained of his knees and elbows hurting. I told him of this and he swears there is no longer any pain...after less than a week. No way this fixed his issues, but in his mind it did. He is 5'5 and an easy 300 for the record.

I probably didnt answer anything in this thread...so here goes, I think trying to eat better is good, but I also think the organic push is another money driven hype.

I see no reason why a placebo should stop "working." You know, just because a placebo alleviates your problem doesn't mean you didn't really have a problem. It just means that your body, based on your faith, has been able to come up with a "cure" of its own.

Someone did a study a long time ago exposing some hospital patients to a great deal of comedy shows, making them laugh. Other patients just got the ordinary hospital treatment. What happened? The patients who laughed a lot recovered and were released sooner than the other patients.

Some people are diagnosed with a terminal illness and given some months to live. They decide they're going to enjoy the life they have and set about doing it. A couple years later, they're still around. You figure it out.

Now I guess you're a preacher so you must believe that faith can work this way, right? I do and I'm not even a preacher.

I suppose I'll have to add this to the conversation (partially to play devil's advocate). I'm only 28 yrs old. My metabolism is naturally fast still (I've never been even remotely to overweight, and I spent much of my adolescent years eating like a kid eats when my parents weren't looking:D). I started becoming more interested in proper diet once in college, but never did anything extreme, just tried eating a more balanced diet. I work out 6 days a week, 3 of which are cardio. I still have my weak moments diet wise, but overall, I eat much cleaner and well rounded than I used to, but not really much in the line of organic produce.

Could I see a difference eventually once I get older? Possibly. It might not be fair to say I don't have many problems eating non organic, but at the same time, I'm also quite young yet.

I was diagnosed with Eosinophillic Esophagitis last summer, however. This is usually a food allergy response in young children. The cause varies in adults (can be both environmental and/or food). They have yet to pinpoint what it might be. So some of this does hit home, Tony.

Here's something that doesn't sit well with me. (Not calling you out PT, but its the knee-jerk mindset that a lot of people have.)

    First you say....

    Then you later say....

If you don't know what to believe, how can you fight for something? The science behind the anit-GMO movement isn't proven. I believe its absolutely wrong to make any industry conform to new regulations when there is no concrete proof that there is a problem. The only thing it will do in this case is drive up the already high cost of food even more.

Maybe because its not being bred out of people? I know it sounds harsh, but with all the advances in medical technology, maybe mother nature isn't able to weed the weak out of the human race. The people with the weak genes are able to survive and pass on these to their children.
