Have any of you thought, researched, or applied any of this?

I have been researching this alot lately ... I always wondered why when I was young, almost no one had allergies ...food or airborne ...now it is rampant.

So here is what I am looking to do....

    Buy and grow organic..... http://www.eatingwell.com/food_news...s_organic_produce_healthier_than_conventional

    Fight for GMO labeling
    http://www.nongmoproject.org/learn-more/what-is-gmo/

    Buy some dairy goats
    http://www.motherearthnews.com/Sustainable-Farming/2002-06-01/Want-Milk-Get-Goats.aspx#axzz2NZEMZlJZ

I already have the chicken thing going ....

    What are your thoughts?

GMO, hormones and antibiotics are my main concern with food. I'm fine with the pesticides and such so stuff doesn't need to be organic.

I am also concerned about imported food from other countries as they don't have to meet the same standards.

We do our own beef, and raise a pretty large garden.

The availability and knowing what it is, great peace of mind.

I've never been huge into this. I do enjoy home grown vegetables, but not to the point where I don't buy them at the store.

I still strongly believe over eating and living 30 years longer than we did 100 years ago is the main cause of our "decline" in health.

Eat a balanced diet and work out every day and you will be healthy....whether or not you choose to milk goats and pay 3 x the amount for your produce.

I think there's merit in some of it. If you can grow and raise your own produce, that's the only way you truly know what you're eating IMHO. I'm not sure about the allergen aspect (food specific, yes, but aero/environmental, no). Again, I do think there are some health conditions or increased frequency of said conditions that may be attributed to processed foods (actually, I'm VERY certain of this).

Can't hurt to eat more home grown foods, but I'm not obsessed over it.

    Shocker! ;)

Stating how much more it costs from people that spend thousands of dollars a year on hunting, fishing, other hobbies, and junk food....well, that dog don't hunt...

I just wonder if we have our head in the sands?

Obsession and education are often bed fellows ;)

It's America. 95% of it is comprised of people with their head in the sand.

Perhaps. My sister-in-law who is GMO, organic, anti-traditional medicine "obsessed" is more sick (as is my brother and their 2 year old son) frequently than we are. I eat fruits, vegetable, rarely ever eat fast food (once every two-three months MAYBE), and of course exercise regularly. We buy meats locally (beef), and have a freezer full of venison and moose. We don't buy our fruits/vegetables anywhere other than the regular grocery store, as I don't buy into the "organic" labels on most store bought produce (education, remember:D).

I also plan to start a garden this summer to help with some fresh produce, but again, I won't loose any sleep if I still have to buy produce from the grocery store.

Maybe it's just my strong dislike for the free range chickens my neighbor has that keep coming over onto my property crapping on my sidewalk and digging through our flower bed:D

You are right.... maybe we have more sniffles and colds now. But when I was young, people died in their 50s and 60s... now their 70s and 80s. LOL Yup, go with that green garden... me, it's after 12 noon... I'm going to have a green beer. Oh wait... that's the bottle color.

Absolutely. Like was stated earlier, the biggest problem today is the all you can eat buffets, Big Gulps, video games and satellite dishes.

GMO plants are nothing more than engineering a plant to take on certain genes so they can resist pests and chemicals. Speaking of chemicals, do you know how fast they break down once they are applied? Obviously it varies from one chemical to another, but oxygen, rain and the sun breaks those pesticides down very quickly in most cases. If you wait the specified amount of time and wash your produce, they are harmless.

This reminds me of when my son was born. The nurse was almost furious with my wife because she couldn't breast feed and we gave up on it and were going to use formula. All the talk we heard about how bad formula is and how great breast feeding is had us a bit freaked out. Well, six years and another child later, our kids are healthier than most anyone their age. When I took them in for their checkup in January, the pediatrician was commenting on how clean their record is and how little they are ever sick. Which surprised me, because I was afraid giving them formula was going to kill them.

Yeah, I don't buy the hype.

Yes...but I am biased as I am a commercial cattle feeder. But still, I wouldn't eat the stuff if I thought it was dangerous in anyway. You should have no worries, we can't go to the bathroom without first getting an okay from Big Brother.

Now garden fresh vegetables are going to be tastier but IMHO, they are no safer nor nutritious.

That's cute. Lets cause an industry to spend a ton of money because of new feel good regulations. Sounds like the global warming debate. Wait, I already said that once.

I guess I'm not "organic" in the definitive sense...We have a large yard (4 acres) and we do have a large garden where we grow our own produce..because we ENJOY doing it, and it tastes so much better than store bought I think. It certainly isn't organic however, we use "Miracle Grow" on most of the garden. and we apply pesticide to our fruit tree's too. Otherwise, we enjoy eating our own grown food, because we know where it comes from and such. We also hunt, so I usually have plenty of Venison and bear in the freezer, AND we also butcher 1 -2 beef steer's each spring, which we raise, where it is fed only grains, and pasture grazed. No medications, hormones, or otherwise.

Other than that, we enjoy our occasional fast food, and store bought groceries.

    Unpasteurized milk? No way!!!!

The rest of it I think is just a bunch of hype designed to make money. (I have nothing against people making money, but I'm not going to pay extra for "organic" food.)

It is funny. Prior to having kids I didn't think about any of this. But when you see your children jamming the food in their face you think about what it really is and where it came from. Emotional.... I know.

I think raw milk and honey are 'better' for you. Raw eggs for that matter too.
I'm not a milk drinker. In fact when I was born I would not drink breast milk and cow's milk made me sick. No formula.. So I started off on goat milk and cereal. LOL I do buy organic cream and half and half. I don't care for the rgb hormones in my cream.

    Raise my own chickens.

I wish beef and pork farmers would get away from the lean animals. And the growth enhancers for cattle that create leaner, less tasty animals. When possible I try local, not pumped full of chemicals, meat.

I think the current GMOs are fine. That's not to say that we shouldn't keep an eye on them but there are a lot of lies and misconceptions about GMOs. And hence, many people think they're some creepy thing that they are not. Like Roundup. It's just a herbicide. Not a particularly bad herbicide as herbicides go... and yet some of the stuff I hear would make you think Roundup sneaks around at night smothering small children and pets. GMOs aren't killing bees, creating super weeds or causing instant tumors and death to anything that eats them. On the other hand I do NOT oppose labeling of GMOs in products. They're freaking everywhere so companies will just slap a line that says 'may contain GMO ingredients' and be done with it.

I think people need to lay off eating so much corn and wheat and other grains. GMO or not. Our current food guidelines are horribly messed up.

Been buying all organic fruits and veggies since my first kid was born almost 4 years ago. He eats all organic meats as well. That **** gets a little too expensive for all of us to be able to do so. My daughter is eating the organic fruits and veggies and when she gets up to meat they'll be organic as well.

My wife is very interested in buying into a local produce/beef CSA and I'm all for it but it's PRICEY!
