Organic Foods. Sold or not sold? Worth the money or just an excuse to charge more? Helps with better health and illness prevention including cancer? Where do you stand on Organic foods?
Organic is worth the time and money in my book especially if you are raising a family. One of my favorite undergrad classes was Botany & Economics & I have often found it interesting that due to the typical monoculture that is found throughout the Midwest that the venison you are eating could not be classified as organic. Nobody seems to care though.
I prefer organic food over inorganic food. LOL Mostly, the 'organic' label is a bunch of hooey. There are too many quirks and big industry has learned to co-opt the label for it's own gain. When I raised chickens, I couldn't label my eggs as being 'organic'. The label required me to only feed non-gmo feed and no animal protein. Because chickens are not designed to be vegetarians the 'organic' feed contains a chemically created amino acid necessary for the chicken to live. That chemical is usually produced in some laboratory in China. Organic also meant the birds couldn't access any ground or area where there was treated wood or where there had been treated wood (even if it had been years since the lumber was gone) . My chickens were free range hens eating clover and other greens, along with whatever bugs they could catch. No antibotics. Natural, healthy, happy hens... but they would never pass the organic labeling test. On the other hand, a factory chicken house with hens crammed in cages that never see greens or sunlight easily can get the organic label.
There's nothing better or more organic than your own garden grown vegetables. But then again... The seeds you plant to grow those veggies may have been sprayed by who knows what. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm for it. Some is a scam. But you are what you eat. We do a garden and if buying store bought meat only buy locally raised grass fed beef, or local free range chickens. I really try not to eat a lot of processed meats or chemically dowsed veggies.
My wife and I don't buy meat, just whatever we kill or catch. But we don't do it because it's organic, we do it because we like it. And plus I have a lot more fun fishing and hunting than picking up a package of meat from the grocery store.
USDA "certified organic" is a joke. I don't care about that. If I'm shopping at a grocery store, I just care about the price and the quality of the meat/produce. If organic looks better, I'll buy it. If the non organic looks better, I'll buy that. With that said, I do care where my food comes from, so I try to buy directly from local farmers as much as possible. I have 2 local farmers that I order weekly baskets from. I've been to both farms and I like the way they take care of their animals and vegetables. Neither are "certified organic" though.
For us it depends, we try to buy good quality food but within the price we want to pay. This thread just reminded me how bad I've fallen off the being healthy wagon...2 kids, less time, no excuses except I like garbage food. I can eat the good stuff I just like my chocolate, donuts, and a particular chinese buffet.
My favorite Organic only supporters are the ones who take antibiotics themselves as well as a smorgasbord of other medicines... Those are my favorite.
Organic started out with good intentions but now it has just become a cheesy label that can be thrown on any product. I don't go out of my way to get organic food. Like Hooker, I give local farms my business. Organic or not, I know what these animals are being fed and their living conditions.
I will tell you this, we have bought from local farmers and organic food for 20+ years, it's all my kids eat. We have zero health issues, allergies or anything we all see today with kids. Is it the food, I don't know.
Organic definitely! But not what the FDA says is organic. They cut so many dang corners they constantly go around in circles! Do your own research and grow as much of your own food as you can!
