20190729_193138.jpg Yesterday my grandson and I dug this watering hole/pond. It's almost 2 feet deep by a little over 3 feet wide. It has a kiddy pool on the bottom and I covered it with a moderate strength water resistant tarp. Do you think this will get filled up with just rain water? Rain and storms are suppose to hit today. This is my first try at doing a water hole.

I’ve never dug one myself but I’d say rain water will fill it up pretty quick. As far as them getting used to it fast may be a different story, unless you covered the tarp with dirt. May also need a bigger corn pile!

I feed a spot like that for my boys to see deer when we go! If feeding them that close they may decide that’s a real nice place to get water!

This is coming out of a large bedding area on the way to a huge soy bean field. There is on very small creek close by, but that's about it as far as water in the area. So I'm hoping this will be a stopping area for some big boys.

Assuming you don't get frost or have any rocks in soil, and you put a pad under the pool it should last a long time. The tarp will make cleaning out the falling leaf debris that will build up.. If the tarp is to avoid hoof damage a layer of sand would do the same thing. Don't forget the "drowning" log in it chips and mice are dumb. Rain would have to be many days and torrential. I save all our milk jugs and or fill a plastic 55 gal. Barrel to fill. Then rain will usually keep it topped off. The milk jugs in a wagon for water tanks in remote areas. I can drive close and walk the jugs to the tank.
Also something guys forget about skeeters. All it takes is a very small amount of DUNK to kill skeeters and not harm animals.. Check once a month.

It might get a small amount of water from rainfall, depending on the amount of rain. It will get more by being where rain drains into it. FWIW, when I lived in KY, a young and new deer hunter got an outstanding buck by setting up by a farm pond.
