Hi, Got up in the tree stand early opening day 2014 Montana archery season, had a nice 140+" full velvet come within 25 yards, shot my first archery buck @ 8:10 am and waited until 10:30 to retrieve the arrow. I felt great about the shot until I saw the arrow, using Grim Reaper Hybrids, and the mechanicals didn't open :-( fat, meat and hair was all that was on the arrow! No blood at all around the shot site so I backed out the opposite direction he ran and waited until 2:30 to return to where I shot him! Only tracked about 30-40 feet and still didn't find any blood or any sign of a shot deer. After sending several pics of the arrow to experienced hunters they are saying that I shot him in the "no dead zone"! I watch a lot of shows and read a lot of forums and this seems to be a non lethal shot, anyone agree? The ethical thing to do is to search and search until I find him so the following day I took my GPS and grid searched the 30 acres I have access to but came up empty.
Thanks everyone! I've learned a ton from the whole bhod community, you guys should take some of the credit! I just have one more batch of scrap to make into sausage and it will be all put away. Whew! Quite a bit of work to put all the meat up, and as usual I didn't even get around to fleshing the skin in time. Maybe one of these deer... I guess I'm just going to do a euro treatment of the head, I didn't cape it or anything. I imagine I'll lose the velvet, but then that little point might actually be measurable and I could call it an eight pointer. Ha! I'll be out in the stand again tomorrow aiming for does, I worked late today.
Always wanted to get a velvet buck but here in oklahoma by time season comes there already freshly out of it . Congrats an it looks like u put a gud lick on him great job
It sounds like he's gone WBJ, but I'm sure someone with more experience could offer better advice. Where did you think you hit him? I made a bad shot on big 9 point with 6 inch brow tines last November. I was using my recurve, so I was lucky in a way: I hit him in the thigh quartering away, and he ran off with the arrow in him. I found the arrow 100yds away and only had an inch or two of penetration. I hope to shoot him again this November with my creed, I won't miss.
I'd call that an 8-pointer! Great story and great shot! I know that feeling, enjoy it! Also Thx for my first buck kill story of the season....now I'm getting ready excited!
