IDK if it is lucky or not, but by the time I return home this weekend for thanksgiving, there will only be 5 days of rifle season left. There may only be 5 deer left as well, but at least I have a shot at not taking a stray bullet while out on my parents spacious 10 acre lot looking for a doe
Found out I have a new pet buck for the year again - course my Mom will prob'ly shoot him...again(3rd yr?). Went to toss out some corn and pumpkins for the city does at my new house and he was making his way into town from our property and came rightto me as I was talking to him...just a little 4pt but could be good in a couple years will have to get the phone pics on photobucket sometime - actually look good but he was only 12 feet away - Other than that few shots and my Dad saw one of the big guys but couldn't see the head or horns - just massive body and swollen neck...chasin a doe. It was a bright and early action maybe 1hr into daylight and then midday 11-1 then nothing for afternoon or evening as far as movement till after dark. And way to hot for deer season - 50 deg....would not have been able to stand having to cook at the camp in this weather.
made it out yesterday, it was a pretty slow day for me since i was hunting a diffrent place then i have all year due to letting the farmer go out and shoot his 3 does to fill the freezer. i havent had anything good show up on camera all year but went out just cause it was opening day so you cant miss it. But the morning hunt ended up having a mom and her babys come right by the stand and that was it for the morning, made it back out for the evening hunt and wouldnt u know it had a guy climb up in a stand not even 80 yards away on his side of the fence. So sat all evening and didnt see any deer finally i seen one with 10 min left of legal shooting light i see one walking to one of the other guys that was out on the property so i didnt even bother to pull up the nocs figuring it was just a doe or small buck. well about 5 min later i look over and the deer was 80 yards from pull up the nocs because it was hard to see with loosing light, well i noticed a great wide tall rack. so i grabed my gun checked the time had 3 min left of legal time found him in the scope squeezed the trigger "nothing" saftey was on, turned the saftey off got back on him squezzed the trigger agin couldnt see anything due to the smoke could hear him running off stopped and another shot went off. Well turns out the rumor has had it there has been a big 10pt roming around the area and it was him. the land owner got a good look at him before he turned to come to me but i ended up doing something and biffed my shot. so he ended up making it away with no scratches. Chalk it up as another mistake on the board.
Someone on the farm I bowhunt shot a busted up 6. Well its more like a 3 now. He was aiming for the lungs and hit it right between the eyes (it was looking at him). That was the third shot he took at it.
Vito I know that shouldn't be funny but for some reason the visual of that is actually making me laugh out loud.
The guy that shot it is a really nice guy, and he was pretty excited. Hey, it did drop him in his tracks! I did get a chuckle out of this classic opening day gun story.
I went out both yesterday and a little tonight. Heard a ridiculous amount of shots opening day and about 10 tonight but I never saw a thing but squirrels. I always hope all the gun fire would spook them to the private land I get to hunt on, no luck.
Good Lord I am glad I don't hunt the L.P. or anywhere up here where there are alot of the 'once a year hunters'! It's ridiculous the stories I'll hear from across the Montreal River in WI when the 'Sea of Orange' hits the woods this weekend.
Yeah man around here its crazy when the gun hunters come out of the wood works around here.I have decided to stay out of the woods for awhile with my bow.
