When did deer hunting stop being deer hunting and turn into the TDM (trophy deer managment) fiasco we have now?

I cannot hardly even stomach to watch the outdoor channel anymore.... I miss the simple days of hunting.

Am I the only one who had to look up "TDM"?

Seriously, you have never heard the term TDM (trophy deer managment)?

I'm factoring out the greatest monomial factors so that the polynomial factor has all interger coefficients. :D

    Easy stuff, but time consuming.

So what's TDM?? I have to get back to my homework.

(of course I could have looked it up in the time I typed this....)

I must not get on the Internet enough. I thought you meant time division multiplexing. :(

As for the shows - there's a few I watch b/c I enjoy the hosts and/or the hunting, but not many.

To me deer hunting just does not seem the way it used to be.

Treestand and cameras being stolen at an alarming rate..
People trying to sabotage other peoples hunting areas.
    People blatantly trespassing.
    Hunters badmouthing other hunters.
People bashing others over the deer they shoot.
Jealous hunters calling the sheriff on legal hunters for trespassing (when they are not)..

Can anyone explain this to me? I cannot.

I can tell you......I log onto another bowhutning site every once in a while (posted less than 5X, this year). And, I log onto my state site a few times a week.

There ARE still places where ANY deer taken is celebrated. They're getting to be fewer and fewer, though. EVRYTHING is turning (I'll use your term, but I'd never heard of it before, either) ----- TDM.

Someone used an analogy a few years ago that I think about, sometimes. Something about remembering how cool it felt to catch panfish with a cane pole and a bobber. You just had fun -- fishin'. I see my hunting heading in that direction.

I've watched maybe an hour or two of the hunting channel in the last year.

I have seen it go directly downhill around here compared to what it was like 30yrs ago. Everyone shot what they wanted (as long as it was legal). We had plenty of deer and very few posted properties. I personally had thousands of acres to choose from at my back door. Now, if you don't belong to a lease, you must search for, or own your own property. Life was much simpler then. I hunted everything I had a chance to hunt. I trapped. I respected others and they respected me, and my property/gear.

There is a very true saying in the Bible, "In the last days evil men shall wax worse and worse, becoming lovers of their own selves more than lovers of God". Therein lies the whole problem with our whole world today. Nuff said. (Whether hunters or non-hunters)

You know... I have read quite a few posts over the years from guys claiming they were feeling the pressure or were stressing out over not tagging a "big buck yet"... I thought it is supposed to be fun, not stressful.

I've stressed, before. I admit it.

Those days are gone....lol. I even rifle hunted on our opener (and this morning).

I've hunted less and had more fun this year......than the last 2 yrs combined.

TDM (as you call it) happened when the information age and QDMA collided.

Don't get me wong.. I think the QDMA is a good organization although misleading at times.

And the information age as related to hunting is when we all learned who Alex Rutledge is. Who? Exactly.

Haven't watched an outdoor show in some time... not because of the deer they take.. but rather because in a 30 minute show... I see very little hunting.. mostly product placement. I watch enough of the NFL for that. Speaking of which.. I kinda want a Coors Light now.

I think every deer should be celebrated despite its size or sex or age. And I think for the most part they are.

It isn't the deer that they shoot that bothers me either. It is the commercialization of bowhunting and I directly relate it to the TDM movement.

I don't watch any hunting shows unless they are doing a free promo on Dish. Then I watch a few shows and remember why I don't suscribe to them. I've got better things to spend my money on... like hunting stuff for me !!! LOL

I will say though... one show made me laugh. It was one of the Warren's shows. Him and his guide were getting ready for a hunt. Warren was running around hanging the lastest and greatest scent wafers on all the trees in the immediate area they were hunting. When he got done... the guide rolled his eyes and said... it looked like he decorating all the trees like it was christmas. It was that bad !!!!!!! He had them hanging all over !!!! Then the guy started talking and I had to flip the channel. I just couldn't take it.

When did deer hunting turn into TDM ?? On TV about 10 - 15 years ago. It hasn't happened here. If it has a rack and is breathing... someone will try to kill it. I like it that way. You aren't guarrenteed a big buck. You either are very lucky or worked hard to kill a real good one. Most times it takes a combination of both to get it done.

    Tim

I try to and often have simple day of hunting each time I pick up my bow. Hunting public land can be interesting to say the least but I try not to let people bother me. I go to the woods to enjoy God's creation and by His grace I will get a chance to take a deer.

    I would agree.

Just yesterday, I was telling my youngest son that I had much more fun when I hunted deer instead of bucks. All the weather watching, wind checking, scent free showers, debating which property and which stand to hunt etc, etc.... its making my hunting seem more like work. I see me getting back to the basics soon, this just isn't much fun for me at the present time.
